Cultivation Technician
The Cultivation Technician (Nursery) supports genetics stewardship and upstream plant production by performing hands-on work in mother plant care, cloning and propagation, and vegetative growth. This role follows established SOPs for sanitation, biosecurity, IPM scouting, environmental monitoring, irrigation and nutrition, and data entry to consistently deliver healthy, uniform plant material to the Flower department on schedule, while maintaining compliance with Pennsylvania medical cannabis regulations and Calypso’s quality and safety standards. Key Responsibilities:
Mother Plant Care
- Perform pruning, shaping, staking, and canopy maintenance in accordance with run cards and SOPs.
- Mix and apply irrigation and nutrient solutions as directed; take and record EC/pH readings and runoff measurements.
- Monitor plant health and promptly flag signs of stress, genetic drift, or pest and disease pressure to Leads or the Manager.
- Select cuttings to specification (node count, stem diameter, internode spacing) and prepare propagation media and trays.
- Maintain strict tool sterilization and bench sanitation; accurately label trays and complete propagation logs.
- Place cuttings under correct environmental setpoints (light intensity, temperature, RH/VPD) and perform daily checks and hardening-off procedures.
- Transplant, up-pot, and space plants; set trellis and plant tags to maintain uniformity targets.
- Perform irrigation events, approved foliar applications, and routine checks of environmental and irrigation equipment.
- Prepare vegetative plants for Flower handoff by meeting height, node count, and structural specifications per schedule.
- Conduct routine IPM scouting, including sticky card review and leaf inspections, and accurately record findings.
- Follow all quarantine, traffic-flow, footwear, tool sanitation, and waste-handling SOPs.
- Assist with biological releases or corrective actions under Manager or QA direction.
- Clean and disinfect benches, domes, tools, carts, floors, drains, and sink areas according to established frequency schedules.
- Stage and restock propagation supplies, including media, labels, domes, trays, and nutrients; maintain 5S organization.
- Use required PPE, follow chemical handling and ergonomic guidelines, and report hazards or unsafe conditions immediately.
- Accurately complete batch sheets, propagation logs, IPM logs, sanitation checklists, and calibration records.
- Tag and move plants correctly within Pennsylvania’s electronic tracking system; reconcile counts and escalate discrepancies within the same shift.
- Support internal and external audits by maintaining neat, legible, and current documentation.
- Work cross-functionally to maintain exemplary standards of cleanliness, organization, functionality, safety, and security throughout the facility
- Perform additional duties as assigned to support efficient, compliant operations
- Rooting success rate: ≥90% viable rooted cuts per batch; time-to-root: ~10–14 days (strain dependent).
- Mother vitality: scheduled renewals; ≤2% mother loss per quarter; genetic drift monitoring with phenotype notes/COAs.
- Veg uniformity: height/node uniformity within target CV; handoff readiness on schedule tolerance.
- Micro/contaminant pass rate: 100% lot pass; zero pest/disease spread events.
- Schedule attainment: ≥95% of plant starts vs. weekly plan.
- Compliance accuracy: 100% plant/lot traceability in PA tracking; zero major audit findings.
- Must be at least 18 years of age
- 1+ year hands-on plant production experience (cannabis, greenhouse/CEA, or comparable nursery) preferred; entry-level candidates with strong horticulture aptitude will be considered.
- Basic understanding of plant physiology, propagation techniques, irrigation, EC/pH, and VPD concepts.
- Comfort using tablets/labels/scanners and following digital/printed run cards and logs.
- Ability to pass a criminal background check.
- Flexible schedule availability including nights, weekends and holidays
- High School Diploma or GED
- Detail-oriented, organized, and reliable; able to follow SOPs precisely and meet production pace.
- Ability to lift, push, and pull 50 pounds
- Ability to sit, squat, bend, and kneel repetitively throughout a workday
- Ability to stand for extended periods of time, reaching, and working at bench height.
- Repetitive hand work (cutting, trimming, transplanting).
- Regular exposure to sanitation chemicals per SDS (PPE provided/required)
- Comfortable working in an environment with constant video surveillance
- Ability to work around plants
- Work can be dirty/sticky and may leave you smelling like cannabis at the end of the day.
- Work will be in a warehouse setting: temperatures may vary from warm to cool.
- Work environments that include exposure to, but not limited to, fumes, dust, odors, heights, indoor AC, no AC, motion, and noise.
