Position Summary and Qualifications:
The Archives Fellow assists the Archivist in special projects at the Saint Joseph University Libraries. This is a part time fellow position that lasts from July 13, 2026 - October 6, 2026. While work hours are flexible, the are during normal daytime hours. The Fellowship is made possible through the Gladys Brooks Foundation.

The Saint Joseph's University Archives and Special Collections is seeking a graduate student in the fields of public history, library/information science, or museum studies for a fellowship to assist in the organization, digitization, access, and promotion of its various collections.

The Fellow will apply practical course related knowledge to digitization, archival processing, finding aid creation, and physical and virtual exhibitions. Working in an archival and special collections environment involves both intellectual and physical responsibilities, including research, writing, scanning, photography, file naming, lifting and moving boxes, climbing on ladders to reach higher shelves, cleaning, rearranging materials and putting away supplies.

Projects may include working with Saint Joseph's collections of oral histories, records of the University, Old Saint Joseph's Church, and Pharmacy school records and history. The Archives and Special Collections are housed in locations on the Hawk Hill campus.

The ability to work collaboratively and independently with attention to detail is necessary. The fellow should be able to support the day to day operations of the department, which are diverse and challenging. Patience and persistence is required.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities: (include but are not limited to)
  • Assist archivist with organization of specialized collection within archives and special collections
  • Work independently on assigned projects
  • Organizing and providing metadata to digitized files
  • Writing and editing archival documents clearly
Minimum Qualifications: (Education/Training and Experience)

Required:
  • Completed or in-process Masters degree in relevant field (public history, library/information science, or museum studies)
  • Familiarity with archives and preservation
Preferred:
  • Archival studies certificate or degree emphasis
  • Demonstrable familiarity with archival theory, practice and applications related to digital repositories, archives and special collections
  • Demonstrable familiarity and/or experience in cataloging and metadata creation
  • Basic reading proficiency in Spanish, Latin or German may be a help
Physical Requirements and/or Unusual Work Hours:
  • This position will require lifting up to 20 pounds and the manipulation of fragile materials
Pay Transparency:

This position has a fixed starting rate of $20.00 per hour.
