Job Description: Staff Accountant – Property Management
Position Overview
The Staff Accountant will support the accounting and financial operations of a diverse property management portfolio, including both multifamily communities and scattered-site properties. This role is responsible for maintaining accurate financial records, preparing reports, and ensuring compliance with internal policies and regulatory requirements. The ideal candidate is detail-oriented, organized, and experienced in property management accounting.
Key Responsibilities
General Accounting
- Prepare monthly journal entries, accruals, and reconciliations for assigned properties.
- Maintain general ledger activity and ensure accurate coding of income and expenses.
- Reconcile bank accounts, escrow accounts, and balance sheet accounts on a monthly basis.
- Process accounts payable/receivable transactions and monitor aging reports.
- Review vendor invoices for accuracy, proper coding, and compliance with contracts.
Property Management Accounting
- Prepare monthly property financial statements (P&L, balance sheet, cash flow).
- Ensure timely recording of rent collections, tenant charges, concessions, and write-offs.
- Reconcile rent rolls and tenant ledgers with property management software.
- Monitor security deposit accounts and ensure compliance with state/local requirements.
- Support budget preparation, reforecasting, and variance analysis for each property.
- Assist property managers with financial questions, providing timely reporting and support.
Compliance & Reporting
- Ensure financial reporting is completed in accordance with GAAP and company policies.
- Maintain compliance with lender, investor, and regulatory reporting requirements.
- Prepare supporting documentation for audits and annual tax returns.
Collaboration
- Partner with Property Managers, Regional Managers, and the leadership team to support financial decision-making.
- Work closely with accounts payable, payroll, and other accounting staff to ensure smooth operations across the portfolio.
Qualifications
- 3+ years of accounting experience, preferably in property management or real estate.
- Experience with property management/accounting software (e.g., Yardi, AppFolio, etc.).
- Strong knowledge of GAAP and familiarity with real estate accounting practices.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and other MS Office applications.
- Excellent organizational skills, attention to detail, and ability to meet deadlines.
- Strong communication skills and ability to collaborate across departments.
Preferred Skills
- Experience with multifamily and scattered-site property portfolios.
- Familiarity with HUD/LIHTC or other affordable housing programs (if applicable).
