Pastoral Ministry Resident

Part Time - Hourly (10 hrs/week)

Ministry Purpose:

The Pastoral Ministry Resident (PMR), under the direct supervision of the Senior Pastor, will gain practical experience and explore various facets of pastoral ministry within the context of local church ministry. This yearly position provides exposure across different ministry areas, including pastoral care, preaching, administration, youth, children’s, and worship/AV ministries in a supportive capacity to the Senior Pastor and other staff, fostering personal and professional growth.

Ministry Scope:

1. Pastoral Ministry, Discipleship and Administration Exposure (~24 weeks):

• Assist the Senior Pastor in various aspects of pastoral care and administration, as directed.
• Participate in preaching planning and review with the Teaching Team.
• Prepare and deliver a limited number of sermons or lead specific worship elements, as agreed upon with the Senior Pastor.
• Attend Staff meetings as directed by the Senior Pastor to gain insight into church operations and collaboration.
• Attend meetings of boards or committees as directed by the Senior Pastor to understand church governance and decision-making processes.
• Check in weekly with the Senior Pastor for theological reflection and discussion, connecting academic studies with practical ministry experience.
• Accompany the Senior Pastor on selected pastoral visits.
• Assist with church communications or administrative tasks that support the resident's learning objectives.
• Help plan and execute Small Group/Life Group ministry.

2. Youth & College Ministry Involvement (~8 weeks)

• Observe and assist the Director of Youth Ministry with weekly programming and major events for middle and high school students.
• Learn about recruiting, equipping, and supporting volunteers in youth ministry.
• Lead or assist with specific aspects of youth programming or small group Bible studies.
• Assist in young adult ministry and events as directed.

3. Children's Ministry Involvement: (~8 weeks)

• Observe and assist the Director of Children’s Ministry with programming for children (preschool through elementary) and their families.
• Assist with the Sunday morning worship experience for children, including some children’s sermons.
• Learn about obtaining, coordinating, and communicating with volunteers and youth helpers in children's ministry.
• Assist with children's messages or other age-appropriate teaching opportunities, as agreed with the Director of Children's Ministry and Senior Pastor.

4. Worship and AV Ministry Involvement (~8 Weeks)

• Gain exposure to the planning and logistics for worship services, coordinating with pastor(s) and music ministry leaders (Organist, Praise Band Director).
• Learn about the technical aspects supporting worship, assisting the AV team or Administrative Assistant with tasks such as preparing slides for projection or managing online links for services.
• Observe music rehearsals and understand the coordination of organ, praise band, and other musical elements within worship.
• Learn about and support social media (e.g., Facebook, Instagram) outreach

Ministry Qualifications:

1. Current enrollment in seminary or pursuing theological education is required. Some experience working or volunteering in a Christian ministry setting is beneficial.

2. The PMR must have a strong personal faith in Jesus Christ, agree with the mission and core values of BCWC, seeking to live as a disciple of Jesus Christ; have a passion for ministry; possess strong interpersonal skills and relate well with children, families, volunteers, and paid staff; be a team player and a leader; be a good organizer and effective in delegating tasks to volunteers; seek continued personal and professional growth; and have knowledge of American Baptist Church Life / Theology or willingness to learn.

3. Annual Safety & Abuse prevention training. Ongoing mentorship and guidance from the Senior Pastor and other ministry staff. Opportunities for theological reflection and discussion connecting studies to practice.

Performance Review:

Performance reviews will be given every six months. These reviews will be conducted by the Senior Pastor in coordination with the SRC .
