Mechanical Engineering Intern

Advanced Robotics for Manufacturing (ARM)
Pittsburgh, PA
Company Description:
The ARM Institute leads the way to a future where people and robots work together to respond to our nation’s greatest challenges and to develop and produce the world’s most desired products. As a federally funded national institute, the ARM Institute’s mission is to accelerate the development and adoption of innovative robotics technologies that are the foundation of every advanced manufacturing activity today and into the future.

Mechanical Engineering Intern / Co-op:
The ARM Institute seeks outstanding students for our internships and co-ops. We view internships as excellent opportunities for us to learn about potential full-time hires while also contributing to students' education and their understanding of work practices in an engineering setting. Please note that this internship is an on-site and full-time position.

We are looking for college sophomore, junior, senior, or master level students who have excellent grades, a demonstrated work ethic, and participation in extracurricular activities. The ARM Institute requires a hands-on approach to engineering including tooling and machine design, rapid prototyping, and the curiosity to see a project through to completion. Participation in a club or activity where teamwork and collaboration are emphasized - whether it’s First Robotics in High School, Baja SAE, or a non-engineering interest; we’re interested in how you interact and engage with others, build upon ideas, collaborate, and work through challenges as a team.

Successful Mechanical Internship candidates demonstrate a thorough understanding of their engineering coursework and experience applying foundational principles to their everyday work. Although ARM primarily uses SolidWorks, experience in Unigraphics, Creo, Fusion 360, Autodesk Inventor, or similar is helpful. Mechanical Engineering Interns will be treated as junior engineers working with an assigned mentor and will assist and work on the following aspects of projects:

Key Responsibilities:
Work assigned to interns depends largely on business needs at the time of internship as well as the experience of the candidate, some examples of work areas include:
  • Contributing to the design of robotic cells
  • Conducting ground-up design of production tooling emphasizing speed and ease-of-use
  • Programming industrial robots
  • Participating in customer-facing discussions and subsequent design reviews
  • Designing vacuum grippers for material handling and manipulation of complex parts
  • Designing a custom test for a robotic component or subsystem
  • Designing test fixtures to simulate the motion of an industrial robotic task
  • Testing and analyzing production performance data on a system build quality and speed
  • Performing thermal or structural analysis on an industrial robot, hand calculations and simulations
  • Analyzing test failures and field failures of robot components and proposed redesigns
  • System requirements development, tracking, and verification
  • Performing statistical analysis to assess whether tolerance stack-ups are acceptable.
  • Learning about computer vision camera models and computer vision algorithms
This is a great opportunity to learn how to document your work, develop your presentation skills, and enhance your technical capability. Hourly rate range is based on education and experience.
THIS POSITION IS OPEN TO US CITIZENS ONLY

We believe diversity is essential to our organization’s growth and success and strive to create an inclusive, accepting culture and seek individuals of all backgrounds to join our innovative organization. ARM is an equal opportunity employer.
