Automotive Electronics Technician

Job Summary
Dorman is seeking an Automotive Electronics Technician to join our growing Electronics Service Team. As an Automotive Electronics Technician, you will identify, decipher, reverse engineer, and verify the messages on today’s vehicle networks (diagnostic messages and normal communication). You will have the opportunity to make a huge impact on the future of Dorman, supporting our talented product development engineers with on-vehicle installation and testing of automotive modules. This is a great opportunity for a Master / A+ Technician with expert level knowledge of automotive diagnostics systems looking to make a career change.
This is a hybrid role, in our corporate headquarters in suburban Philadelphia (Colmar, PA) Monday through Thursday with the ability to work from home on Friday.
Primary Duties
- Install, program, benchmark, and validate automotive electronic modules on vehicles.
- Develop relationships with local automotive repair facilities that Dorman can partner with for vehicle testing.
- Reverse engineer vehicle communication networks for late model vehicles.
- Utilize OEM and Aftermarket automotive diagnostic tools (MDI2, VCM3, etc.) for data analysis, module functionality, and programming.
- Build benchtop vehicle simulators.
- Manipulate data and messages on the network to verify interpretation/results.
- Assist Product Development team and/or Design Engineers in their effort to understand vehicle communication messages relative to the product(s) they are developing.
- Other duties as assigned.
Education / Experience
- 5+ years of extensive automotive diagnostics experience; Master / A+ Technician preferred.
- Knowledge of automotive network protocols: CAN, LIN, J1939 - PLEASE INCLUDE THIS EXPERIENCE ON YOUR RESUME.
- Proficient at resolving drivability issues and electrical problems.
- Proficient at interpreting and using vehicle wiring diagrams/schematics and service manuals
- Knowledge of vehicle electronic systems and troubleshooting issues with them.
- Strong strategy based diagnostic skills (the “go to” tech in the shop).
- Persistent and tenacious in resolving technical problems.
- Takes initiative in finding solutions to problems.
- Comfortable with unsupervised learning.
- Physical Requirement : Capability to lift 20 pounds.
- Working Conditions : While performing the duties of this job, the employee may be required to reach, swivel, carry items from one location to another, and speak and actively listen. The noise level may be moderate.
