The Veterinary Medical Director will assist the MCSPCA in building a compassionate, experienced veterinary team that includes additional veterinarians and veterinary technicians. Responsible for the care and welfare of all animals in the shelter. Performs spay, neuter, and other routine surgeries as necessary. Available for after-hour veterinary emergencies and consultations. Responsible for the oversight and ordering of essential medications and supplies. This is a full-time, on-site first shift role, with occasional on call. Requires surgery experience.
Essential Duties:
- Perform an in-house examination on any animal requiring attention. Prescribe treatment when necessary. Perform surgical medical intervention if needed.
- Alter all animals adopted from our facilities.
- Work with training Animal Care Technicians in vaccination, treatment, and health protocols.
- Perform or authorize euthanasia as necessary to alleviate suffering, failing health, and/or when behavioral concerns are warranted.
- Carry a mobile phone and when on-call, respond to injured and sick stray animals, animals in the shelter, or recently adopted pets in need of veterinary attention. When there are multiple veterinarians, a prearranged schedule will be made for determining the on-call veterinarian.
- Provide treatment for all animals recently adopted from the shelter and having a kennel-related illness or injury. This care will be provided both through consultation with the adopter over the telephone and in person and with in-house treatment of the animal, as necessary.
- Responsible for responding to any and all Montgomery County SPCA locations as the Society’s needs may dictate. In general, emergency coverage will be through the Conshohocken facility.
- Respond to the scene of an emergency to provide emergency care on rare occasions. This may be anywhere in Montgomery County.
- Provide treatment to any animal(s) obtained by a Humane Society Police Officer or any other Police Officer for violation of the cruelty to animal laws. The veterinarian will be called to testify as to the condition of the animal(s) and the steps they took to provide treatment or ease the suffering. If the animal is already deceased, a necropsy may be necessary.
- Perform examinations for quarantined animals or- when necessary- decapitate deceased animals to have a sample sent for testing for possible rabies exposure.
- Coordinate with managers to evaluate and determine the adoptability of animals as needed. This includes determining age, behavioral concerns, and identification of any chronic or acute medical concerns and/or wound care.
- Provide written reports on veterinary care for the Board of Directors
- Hold and maintain DEA licenses for shelter.
Knowledge and Skills:
- Excellent communication skills a must. Must be able to direct staff in proper care of animals, as necessary. Clearly explain health issues in laymen’s terms to clients.
- Possess the skill to examine and suggest changes to shelter procedures as necessary for improved health and to meet best practices and legal guidelines for animal care.
- Ability to adjust programs to meet operational needs.
Working Conditions:
· On site, 8-hour shift with some on call duties as well.
· Work involves walking, bending, squatting, standing, and handling animals.
· Exposure to physical risk is moderate.
· Surgical room.
· Some lifting is required.
Minimum Job Requirements:
College degree and current valid Pennsylvania veterinary license.
