Motional’s Pittsburgh office is located in the new Hazelwood Green development, a culmination of the city’s goal of restoring an economic driver to the neighborhood in a thoughtful, inclusive, and sustainable way. With views along the Monongahela river, the Pittsburgh office is in the heart of this new state of the art development.

This role is based in our Pittsburgh office and requires in-office days each week.

Mission Summary:

This role directly contributes to Motional’s future in mobility and redefining transportation as a whole. As an AV Testing Operator you’ll be expected to hold safety at the highest level while operating our Autonomous Vehicles (AVs), have a strong attention to detail, outstanding communication practices both verbally and written, and embrace our values as a member of the Motional team. As an AV Testing Operator you’ll be working with new technologies in a fast paced environment being asked to adapt in our ever changing industry.

What You'll Be Doing:

  • Safely operate prototype-level Autonomous Vehicles on both defined and undefined routes, including a variety of geographic and environmental conditions
  • Operate in-vehicle data recording computers, including start/stop recording, data marking and minor debugging when issues arise
  • Provide clear, accurate and useful subjective feedback to the engineering teams on vehicle behavior observed
  • Ensure the safe operation of our test vehicles on public roads
  • Be able to provide quality service for passengers when applicable
  • Able read and understand highway and street signs and all traffic signals
  • Able to speak sufficient English in order to speak with public safety officers if necessary
  • Maintains current knowledge and adherence to all Motional operating policies, procedures and directives
  • Arrives to work on time and with proper driving credentials on his/her person and is ready to work
  • Maintains current knowledge and is in compliance with Pittsburgh traffic laws
  • Performs pre-trip and post-trip inspection of the Autonomous Vehicle. This includes conducting an external/internal visual inspection of the vehicle and testing all necessary equipment, operating devices and controls
  • Properly care for assigned vehicle and all components as prescribed by the Company
  • As needed: Completes accident and incident reports
  • Control and manage emergency situations according to company procedures
  • Follow all safety policies and procedures
  • Able to work in a team environment and drive with another person. Maintain cooperative behavior towards fellow team members, leads, supervisors, and managers
  • Familiar with ride-hailing practices and ability to successfully interact and engage with members of the public

What We're Looking For:

  • Candidates must have and maintain a clean driving record for the previous 3 years and no DUIs for previous 10 years
  • Prior experience as an Operator/Driver for Autonomous Vehicles, including some type of internal or external training on
  • Autonomous Vehicle technology is preferred
  • High school diploma or equivalency
  • The position may require some travel
  • Experience and training on providing subjective feedback on vehicle behaviors and environment
  • Must be able to successfully complete in-house driving course/examination
  • Local knowledge in test city of streets, geography and environmental features that may be challenging for Autonomous Vehicles
  • Able to work days, nights and weekends
  • Must be able to use company communication systems and communicate clearly and effectively both written and verbal
  • Must be able to read a map and possess knowledge of the Pittsburgh area
  • Minimum of three (3) years of overall licensed driving experience

Bonus Points (not required):

  • Basic working-knowledge of Autonomous Vehicle technology
  • Experience with NHTSA Levels 2-5 Autonomous Vehicles preferred

Working Conditions:

  • Requires the ability to observe near/far/depth and color to safely operate Autonomous Vehicles and computer screens
  • Able to be in confined stationary position to operate a vehicle for up to four (4) hours at a time for a total of up to ten (10) hours per day
  • Able to be to be a driver and a passenger in an Autonomous Vehicle
  • Able to operate grip gear shift, brake release, and steering wheel requiring coupling forces up to ten (10) lbs.
  • Reach to either left or right shoulder to pull seat belt across body
  • Move around the vehicle at beginning and end of shift for inspection of vehicle
  • Will also inspect underneath of vehicle for leaks or damage
  • Able to stay awake and alert on shift at all times

Because interfacing with the public in a confined setting is an essential function of the job, Motional currently requires those performing this role to be fully vaccinated. This position may be required to drive a Motional vehicle such as test cars, commercial cars or pool vehicles. Because of the safety sensitive requirements of this job position, employees will be required to complete a new hire drug test and will be required to undergo random drug testing.

The salary range for this role is an estimate based on a wide range of compensation factors including but not limited to specific skills, experience and expertise, role location, certifications, licenses, and business needs. The estimated compensation range listed in this job posting reflects base salary only. This role may include additional forms of compensation such as a bonus or company equity. The recruiter assigned to this role can share more information about the specific compensation and benefit details associated with this role during the hiring process. Candidates for certain positions are eligible to participate in Motional’s benefits program. Salary Range: $50,000 USD - $52,000 USD
