POSTION INFORMATION

Title of Position: Assistant Director (Department of Parks and Recreation)

Full Time - 40 Hours Per Week

GENERAL PURPOSE

The Assistant Director provides for the overall general health, safety, and enjoyment of parks, facilities,

aquatic, fitness, and recreation patrons. This position assists with professional and administrative planning,

development, scheduling, and implementation of parks, facilities, aquatic, fitness, and recreation programs and

operations for the Derry Township Parks & Recreation Department.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED

Works under the direction of the Director of Parks & Recreation.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED

Under the direction of the Director, the Assistant Director will exercise general and delegated administrative

supervision over full-time and part-time staff, including aquatic, fitness, recreation, and maintenance personnel.

In coordination with the Director, the Assistant Director conducts employee performance evaluations and

administers discipline when necessary.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Assists in the communication of plans, policies, and procedures to staff and the public.

Directly oversees and coordinates the marketing efforts of the Parks & Recreation Department, including

promotional campaigns, social media, Community Center display screens, Township E-News content, Parks &

Recreation Newsletter, and other outreach initiatives.

Assists in managing the Parks & Recreation Department budget under the direction of the Director, including

monitoring expenditures, revenues, and financial performance of the department. Assists in daily management

of departmental financial reports.

Assists in planning, organizing, and scheduling departmental workloads and staff assignments. Trains,

motivates, and evaluates assigned staff; reviews progress and directs changes as needed to improve

efficiency and effectiveness of operations. Assists in maintaining harmony among employees and resolves

conflicts.

Oversees full-time and part-time Parks & Recreation maintenance staff, including work assignments,

scheduling, performance monitoring, snow removal coordination, facility alarm notifications, and assistance

with departmental project coordination.

Assists subordinates in performing duties and addresses errors and complaints.

Negotiates, oversees, and evaluates contracts and independent contractors related to Parks & Recreation

programs and services.

Assist in developing, implementing, and supervising aquatic, fitness, and recreation programming, including

oversight of the registration process and status. Review program areas, recommends changes or new

programs to meet the recreational needs of the community.

Gathers, interprets, prepares, and coordinates data for studies, reports, and recommendations with other

departments and agencies as directed.Develops, plans, coordinates, and implements as the lead for special events offered by the Parks & Recreation

Department, including staffing and on-site supervision.

Coordinates with the Public Works Department regarding park, facility, and grounds maintenance needs and

Coordinates large park and facility rentals in collaboration with the Parks & Recreation Administrative

Assistant.

Assists in the development and implementation of policies, procedures, and standards for efficient and

effective operation and maintenance of the department. Assures compliance with established policies and

procedures.

Coordinates staff training on Emergency Action Plans and necessary health and safety training. Reports all

accidents/incidents promptly and completes required emergency forms.

Ensures equipment, facilities, and grounds are safe, operational, and properly maintained; coordinates repairs

and replacements as needed. Monitors, records, and maintains necessary operating documents.

Assists in the development and implementation of departmental policies, procedures, and standards, ensuring

compliance with Township policies and safety regulations.

Performs other related duties as required to support the operations of the Parks & Recreation Department.

WORK SCHEDULE

Fills in for Parks & Recreation Director as needed including attending and participating in Township Board of

Supervisor meetings in Director’s absence.

The work schedule is consistently Monday through Friday. Evening, weekend, and holiday hours are typically

required on a monthly basis due to programs, special events, meetings, and operational needs. Fills out PTO

required leave request to the Director prior to any absence.

PERIPHERAL DUTIES

Performs a variety of miscellaneous duties such as answering phones, replying to emails, running errands,

picking up departmental supplies, set up of facility equipment such as tables, chairs, maintenance equipment,

and snow removal.

Works as aquatic, fitness, and recreation Coordinator substitute as needed.

Relates to patrons professionally and courteously and responds to public inquires within 48 hours.

Serves as a member of various employee committees, as assigned.

Attends all staff departmental trainings and meetings.

Coordinates stocking and inspection of all health and safety equipment.

Maintains related records and statistics for various aquatic, fitness, and recreation programs.

Monitors and assists with the interior and exterior cleanliness of the facility.Interacts professionally with peers, leads team to unity and ensures smooth operation directly reflecting the

policies, procedures, and philosophy of the Township of Derry Department of Parks and Recreation.

DESIRED MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Experience:

(A) Graduation from a college or university with a bachelor’s degree in Parks & Recreation,

Aquatics, Physical Education, Sport Management, or related field of study. Coursework in

organization, administration, and finance is desired.

(B) (C) Must have at least three (3) years of experience in parks and recreation programs or equivalent

leadership and programming experience.

Experience with American Red Cross Courses at an instructor level preferred.

NECESSARY KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

(A) (B) (C) (D) Thorough knowledge of the principles and practice of modern parks and recreation programs, of

equipment and facilities required in a comprehensive park and recreation program, of the

principles and practices of maintenance, construction, and use of public buildings and park

facilities; considerable knowledge of community recreation needs and resources; knowledge of

the principles and practices of office management, work organization and supervision.

Skill in the operation of listed tools and equipment.

Ability to plan, organize, coordinate and implement a comprehensive community park and

recreation program, to coordinate, analyze, and utilize a variety of reports and records, to

communicate effectively, verbally and in writing, to establish and maintain effective working

relationships with employees, supervisors, other agencies, and the public.

Current certification in American Red Cross First Aid/CPR/AED preferred and the ability to use

common sense and sound judgement.

TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT USED

Various hand tools used in the maintenance of parks, aquatic, fitness, and recreation equipment, telephone,

handheld radio, personal computer, mobile device, and all rescue apparatus.

natatorium conditions. The employee is exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, and all pool related
