The Special Education Support Staff plays a critical role in assisting students with disabilities by providing individualized support and guidance, both academically and behaviorally. This position is ideal for compassionate individuals who are dedicated to fostering a positive learning environment and supporting the educational development of students with diverse needs.

Key Responsibilities:

Data Recording and Reporting: Accurately document and report essential information related to students' academic progress, behavioral developments, and health status. Maintain detailed service logs to ensure all relevant data is captured.

Instructional Support: Help students use instructional materials and equipment effectively, adapting to their specific needs to facilitate learning.

Parent Communication: Provide feedback to parents regarding students' progress, observations, and any challenges, both verbally and in writing.

One-on-One Student Support: Work directly with students to reinforce learning objectives, offering personalized attention to help students meet their academic goals.

Adaptation of Materials: Modify activities, assignments, or materials as needed, following guidance from the teacher and parents, to help students successfully complete tasks.

Behavioral and Emotional Support: Assist students in managing emotional or behavioral concerns, guiding them in developing appropriate social skills and positive behaviors.

Behavioral Techniques and Positive Reinforcement: Help implement strategies for behavioral management, including positive reinforcement, to encourage student growth and self-regulation.

Safe Learning Environment: Ensure a safe, supportive learning space where students feel comfortable and can thrive.

Health and Emergency Support: In the event of an emergency, respond calmly and appropriately. First Aid and CPR certification is preferred but not required.

Physical Health Reporting: Notify parents of any changes in the student's physical condition that may impact their learning or behavior.

Required Knowledge:

Understanding of Students with Disabilities: Knowledge of the growth, development, and educational challenges faced by students with disabilities.

Familiarity with IDEA: A thorough understanding of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) and its impact on special education programs and services.

Educational Disabilities and Special Education Programs: Knowledge of the various types of disabilities and special education programs, as outlined by IDEA.

Required Skills and Abilities:

Patient and Understanding Attitude: The ability to demonstrate patience, understanding, and receptiveness when working with students of diverse ages, temperaments, and abilities.

Professionalism: Maintain a professional demeanor at all times in behavior, communication, and interaction with students, parents, and colleagues.

Collaboration: Work collaboratively with students, parents, and school staff to ensure the best possible learning experience for the student.

Language Skills: Ability to read, write, and speak English effectively for communication and documentation.

Computer and Technology Skills: Comfortable using computers and relevant software applications for managing student data and accessing educational tools.

Confidentiality: Ability to maintain student confidentiality, ensuring sensitive information is handled securely.

Cyber Classroom Navigation: Navigate and use cyber classroom websites or platforms as needed for student learning.

Behavior Modification: Learn and apply behavior modification strategies to support positive student development.

Assistive Technology: Learn to use instructional materials and assistive technologies, including communication devices, to aid students' learning experiences.

Service Log Maintenance: Keep accurate and up-to-date records of services provided to students, ensuring all data is correctly documented.

Emergency Response: Remain calm and act appropriately during emergency situations to ensure the safety of students.

Qualifications:

Educational Requirements: A minimum of 60 college credits or an Associate's degree is required.

Experience: At least one year of experience working with adolescents in settings such as employment, volunteering, internships, or student teaching.
