Teaching Professor in Integrated Environmental Systems for Building Performance & Design

Carnegie Mellon University
Pittsburgh, PA

The School of Architecture at Carnegie Mellon University (CM–A) invites applications for a teaching-track faculty position at the rank of Assistant or Associate Teaching Professor.

This position will support key areas of the CM–A curriculum relative to: the integration of active and passive building systems in design; building performance modeling; regenerative approaches to environmental systems engineering; evidence-based approaches to regenerative and high-performance design; context-specific responsiveness; and performance measurement, evaluation and rating systems. The ideal candidate will combine technical expertise in next-generation mechanical, energy, and electrical systems with holistic architectural thinking. They should be adept at using both industry standards and innovative approaches to environmental performance simulation to inform design decisions. Responsibilities

This position focuses on integrating advanced building systems and technologies to improve building performance, enhance IEQ, and promote resilience.

Teaching : The successful candidate should demonstrate the ability to communicate complex environmental and mechanical systems concepts to architecture students and to support design integration across all scales of the built environment. The candidate should also bring expertise in building performance simulation and global environmental rating systems, ideally with accomplishments in practice or research. The candidate may be engaged to teach coursework as appropriate to their specializations across the school’s programs, including the B.Arch, M.Arch, Master of Science, and doctoral programs. The position may also involve contributing to or co-teaching design integration studios where building systems and environmental performance are synthesized through architectural design projects. Carnegie Mellon's Teaching Track is a non-tenure faculty path focused on teaching and curriculum development, offering a career-oriented, renewable, fixed-term position with opportunities for promotion through assistant, associate and full Teaching Professor ranks. The primary responsibilities of this track focus on teaching and instructional activities, allowing faculty to engage in research and leadership roles without the pressure of a tenure clock. These positions provide job security and academic freedom through fixed-term appointments with opportunities for reappointment and promotion. Background in Academia, Research and/or Practice: We welcome candidates with a background in practice, academia and/or research. Candidates with expertise in the curricular areas described above, as well as candidates whose practice or research has focused on innovations in high-performance design and engineering, performance simulation, low-energy buildings and building systems, dynamic facades, and other related areas, are encouraged to apply. Inherently interdisciplinary, the position offers opportunities for collaboration with colleagues from across CM–A’s three focus areas — building performance, urbanism and computation — and with colleagues from across the Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) campus. Current research at CM–A includes high-performance buildings, next-generation lighting and daylighting, IEQ, innovative facade systems, regenerative materials, life-cycle of building systems, and ecologically regenerative design. Service & Mentoring : Beyond teaching, the candidate will be expected to provide academic and professional advising support for the M.S. and Ph.D. in Building Performance & Diagnostics (MSBPD and PhD-BPD), the M.S. in Regenerative and Sustainable Design (MSRSD), and the M.S. in Architecture–Engineering–Construction Management (MSAECM) programs. Additional service responsibilities to the school and university will be determined annually by the head of school. Service to academic and professional organizations will be at the discretion of the candidate.
