Position Title: Metallurgist

Reports To: Director of Engineering

Department: Engineering

FLSA Status: Exempt, Full-Time

Salary Range: $70,000 – $100,000 per year (commensurate with experience)

Position Summary

The Metallurgist ensures the integrity of metal materials through sound metallurgical practices. This role is responsible for determining the metallurgical procedures necessary to provide assurance of quality in the metal materials used in production and for supporting continuous improvement across forging, heat treating, and machining operations.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

• Sample incoming steel shipments to verify microstructure cleanliness and conformance to mechanical properties.

• Sample and test products subjected to internal heat-treating operations for structural analysis, including:- Forging

  • Heat Treating
  • Machining

• Evaluate products against the following criteria:- Functional Specification:- Strength - Wear - Structure

  • Competitors' products
  • Failure analysis of field returns

• Establish heat-treating procedures for the product line.

• Advise on New Products and New Process Committees.

• Specify, purchase, and install various types of heat-treating systems as required to support production goals.

• Serve as the designated Laser Safety Officer, maintaining compliance with all applicable laser safety standards and procedures.

Qualifications and Requirements

• Bachelor's degree in Metallurgical Engineering, Materials Science, or a closely related field.
• Minimum of 5 years of professional experience working with ferrous metals.
• Minimum of 2 years of hands-on laser heat-treating experience.
• Working knowledge of laser safety standards; ability and willingness to assume the role of Laser Safety Officer.
• Demonstrated ability to collaborate effectively with all levels of management to resolve production issues.
• Experience specifying, purchasing, and installing heat-treating systems and related capital equipment.
• Strong analytical, problem-solving, and written/verbal communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications

• Advanced degree in Metallurgy or Materials Science.
• Experience in a manufacturing or forging production environment.
• Familiarity with failure analysis techniques and laboratory instrumentation (SEM, hardness testing, metallographic prep).

Work Environment and Physical Requirements

• Split time between laboratory/office settings and the manufacturing floor.
• Exposure to noise, heat, and industrial equipment typical of a metalworking environment.
• Required use of personal protective equipment (PPE) including safety glasses, hearing protection, and steel-toe footwear.
• Ability to stand, walk, and occasionally lift up to 40 pounds.

Compensation and Benefits

The annual salary range for this position is $70,000 – $100,000, depending on education, experience, and qualifications.
