Professor teaching assistant
Teaching Assistant Professor of Sport History—20th Century United States, University of Pittsburgh
The Department of History in the Kenneth P. Dietrich School of Arts & Sciences and the College of General Studies (CGS) at the University of Pittsburgh invite applications for a full-time, appointment-stream Teaching Assistant Professor of Sport History, with a focus on the 20th Century United States, pending budgetary approval. The course load is three undergraduate courses per semester. In consultation with both the History Department and the College of General Studies, three courses will be taught online and three courses in person annually. This position, which is outside of the tenure stream, begins at the start of the Fall Term 2026 and is for an initial two-year term. It is renewable based on need, funding, and performance. Salary and benefits are competitive, and there are promotion opportunities according to guidelines established by the Dietrich School. Applicants should have a strong track record of innovation and success in undergraduate and online teaching and be able to teach both introductory-level and upper-level courses in Sport History. Preference will be given to candidates who have familiarity with the Canvas learning management system; a proven ability to interact effectively with diverse undergraduate student audiences, including nontraditional students; and experience in developing courses and interdisciplinary programs. Minimum Qualifications- PhD in History, with specific training in Sport History
- Experience teaching in a research university with a diverse student body, including nontraditional and adult students.
- Experience as instructor of record for courses in Sport History
- Experience in teaching asynchronous on-line courses and online course development.
- Specialization in 20th and 21st-century US with interests that complement the development of an interdisciplinary curriculum in Sport Studies
- Proven specialty in race, gender, and sport; sport and global capitalism
- Proven record of active learning pedagogies
- In consultation with the History Department and the College of General Studies (CGS), teach a combination of online and in-person courses each semester.
- Develop additional online general education history courses related to Sport History.
- Meet with students to provide support for their learning and mentoring, appropriate to their educational needs.
- Contribute to departmental initiatives/service
- A letter of application, addressed to John Stoner, chair of the search committee.
- Current CV, including a list of courses taught and locations.
- Teaching Portfolio (12 pages max) that includes:
- a statement of teaching philosophy and/or pedagogical practices in both in-person and online teaching;
- evidence of teaching effectiveness (e.g., student evaluations);
- syllabus for a course in the History of Sport;
- second sample syllabus for an online course.
