The Head Coach, Strength & Conditioning for Men’s Basketball will support the Department of Athletics’ vision of providing an excellent student-athlete experience surrounding all aspects of sports performance and foster a commitment to diversity and inclusiveness throughout the program. Specifically, the incumbent will oversee the strength and conditioning of men’s basketball student-athletes (and any other student-athletes as assigned) in a manner that optimizes all aspects of the physical development of the student-athletes. All such efforts must be carried out in a manner that prioritizes the safety and well-being of the student-athletes and is in compliance with all professional standards of care and NCAA and Atlantic 10 rules and regulations. Collaborate with fellow strength and conditioning coaches to the benefit of all student-athletes.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities:
Design and conduct a strength and conditioning program for men’s basketball student-athletes in a manner that prioritizes the safety and well-being of the student-athletes and is in compliance with all professional standards of care
Ensure that the program referenced above considers and includes as appropriate injury prevention, strength development, conditioning development, recovery, agility, mobility, flexibility, as well as corrective exercise prescription as needed
Work collaboratively with sports medicine and abide by injury prevention, modifications, and limitations from team medical staff (physicians and athletic trainers)
Teach weight lifting and conditioning techniques and safety
Ensure that any equipment used by student-athletes or others is in working condition and safe at the time of use
Evaluate and procure sport science or performance-based technology to optimize physical development of student-athletes within budget constraints; ensure that technology used creates manageable and useful data that benefits student-athletes and coaches
Maintain knowledge of best practices in the field
Monitor the progress of each basketball student-athlete through verifiable documentation; treat with utmost confidentiality and sensitivity any matter pertaining to medical, academic and personal data of basketball student-athletes
Maintain effective communication and positive, collaborative relationships with departmental staff, coaches and sports medicine staff and any third parties providing services to the department.
Strict adherence to all NCAA, conference, and institution health and performance legislation, policies, procedures, recommendations, and best practices.
Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelor’s Degree in an appropriate field, such a kinesiology or human performance; Master’s degree in exercise science, kinesiology or related field preferred
3-5 years of experience with an intercollegiate and/or professional basketball team; or equivalent experience with combination of other sports.
Strong understanding of the game of basketball and the physical requirements thereof
Detail-oriented, organized and an ability to work in a fast-paced environment
Must have strong interpersonal and communication skills to interact with a diverse group of internal and external constituents
Required to maintain current certification through a nationally-accredited strength and conditioning certification program (National Strength Coaches Association or Collegiate Strength and Conditioning Coaches Association) in accordance with NCAA requirements
Adherence to professional standards of care, NCAA and member conference rules and regulations
Knowledge or interest in innovative aspects of strength and conditioning for basketball to further develop players
The successful candidate will be subject to a pre-employment background check
The successful candidate will be required to obtain First Aid, CPR, motor vehicle safety certification, and other job-related certifications
Physical Requirements and/or Unusual Work Hours:
Occasional need to lift, move and otherwise prepare equipment and facilities in preparation for practice, competition and special events
Position requires frequent evening, weekend, and potential holiday hours
Attendance at basketball home games and travel to away basketball games will be required
