Precision Tooling and Die Fabrication Machinist
What a Day Looks Like
You start your shift with a set of blueprints, a block of metal, and a clear outcome: a precise die, fixture, or cutting tool. You study specifications, visualize the end product, and plan your sequence. From the layout table to the grinder, you move with purpose—measuring, machining, fitting, and verifying at each step until every dimension hits the mark.
Role Overview
Use your knowledge of tool and die design, shop math, metal properties, and machining/assembly practices to fabricate and repair dies, cutting tools, jigs and fixtures, gauges, and machinists’ hand tools. You’ll lay out stock, set up and run machine tools, and assemble components to exacting standards.
How You’ll Contribute
- Interpret blueprints, sketches, models, and descriptions to determine materials, tooling, processes, and machines required.
- Plan dimensions, layouts, assembly methods, and the sequence of operations for efficient, accurate builds.
- Measure, mark, and scribe metal stock before machining.
- Set up and operate lathes, milling machines, and grinders to machine parts; verify conformance to specifications.
- Lift and position parts by hand or hoist; secure work using vises, V-blocks, and angle plates.
- Confirm dimensions, alignment, and clearances using dial indicators, gauge blocks, thickness gauges, and micrometers.
- Perform heat treatment on tools or parts when needed.
- As applicable, connect wiring and hydraulic lines to integrate electrical/hydraulic components.
- Review existing dies/tools/fixtures to recommend design improvements for construction and function.
- Develop specifications for specialty tools from general descriptions; sketch or draw concepts.
- Coordinate with supervisors and teammates to receive instructions and align activities.
- Inspect and measure parts throughout the process.
- Calibrate and maintain your personal tools.
- Experience with CNC equipment is a plus.
- Perform other related tasks as assigned.
Occasional Responsibilities
Use CAD systems to design parts or generate prints.
What You Bring
- 4–10 years through trade school, vocational training, apprenticeship, and/or hands-on work experience.
- Proficiency in: GD&T, equipment troubleshooting, general troubleshooting, CAD software, G-code, M-code, manual machining, tool/die/mold repair and setup, and blueprint reading.
Tools & Technologies
- Manual Grinder
- CNC Lathe (2–4 axis) — Mazak, Haas, Okuma, Takisawa
