Land Steward, Full-Time Seasonal
Neighborhood Land Power Project’s mission is to build a neighborhood rooted food and land system through community leadership development and land-based strategies in West Philadelphia.
Position Summary: Full-Time Seasonal Land Steward
The Full-Time Seasonal Land Steward is responsible for maintaining and developing regenerative growing practices and projects across NLPP’s four sites and working in collaboration with the Lead Land Steward to orient and support staff, students, and volunteers. The Full-Time Seasonal Land Steward will act as a team leader when necessary, working closely with NLPP Lead Land Steward (LLS) and other staff in creating collective and collaborative spaces to engage neighbors, community groups and volunteers to expand NLPP’s food sovereignty and land justice practices.
Reports to: Lead Land Steward
Pay and Benefits: $19.50/hour, 40 hours per week with a $200 monthly fringe benefit stipend. This position is available from March 30, 2026 through November 13, 2026.
Status: Non-Exempt, full-time
Role Expectations:
- Conduct sustainable food production at NLPP sites including, trellising, pruning, no or low till land prep, organic pest control and organic fertilizing, growing starts, planting, irrigation, composting, etc., utilizing core permaculture practices.
- Engage in the direct maintenance at NLPP sites alongside seasonal land stewards including weeding, trash pickup, maintaining and organizing common spaces/refrigerator/sheds, tool and truck maintenance.
- Facilitate harvest days and distributions alongside staff and community volunteers.
- Contribute to fostering a thoughtful, kind, educational, and collective-work community space; ensure that neighbors, members, volunteers, and partners feel welcome, engaged, and invested in all NLPP’s sites.
- Collaborate with Lead Land Steward to conduct skill shares, identify, lead and allocate tasks among staff and volunteers and participate in farm tours.
- Participate in winter planning and capital improvement projects at NLPP sites (i.e. high tunnel repairs, other structural needs).
- Stay current in urban farming/agroecology innovations. Test practical applications that combat climate change; honor cultural growing traditions and practices that reflect our community.
- Participate in, lead and support organizational meetings, retreats, events, programs and planning
- Seek opportunities for personal and professional growth that forwards NLPP’s work and strategy.
- Consent to releasing photos, video and verbal quotes to be used for organizational and promotional purposes
- All other tasks, as assigned by the Lead Land Steward.
Qualifications:
- Education : Minimum of a High School Diploma or G.E.D. equivalency, and some continuing education (i.e. trade/vocational school, college, internship, or on-the-job training).
- Experience : At least one year of growing experience at a farm or community gardens. Experience with urban farming, working in an urban environment, and use of regenerative growing practices preferred. Orchard experience a plus.
- Skills : Communicate effectively and work collectively in a team environment. Ability to implement regenerative growing practices at an urban farm. Ability to problem-solve and be solution focused. Building skills and working knowledge of farm and orchard tools a plus.
- Abilities : Abilities: Lift 50 pounds; walk, stand, kneel, drive and bend for long periods of time; work in varying weather conditions; and engage in strenuous tasks while modeling endurance and emotional intelligence.
- Characteristics : Commitment to racial, economic, environmental and social justice; respect for people of all cultures and backgrounds; open to personal growth and new experiences; and demonstrate a passion for working alongside youth and community members.
- Requirements : Have a Driver’s License and clean driving record; can pass all background checks as required by the organization to work with youth.
- Preference : Living within the Haddington neighborhood or in a neighboring community is a plus.
Working conditions : This role requires flexibility in scheduling throughout the season. Early morning, evening, and weekend work may be required. We work in an outdoor urban environment in all weather conditions.
