Overview

This fellowship position offers a comprehensive, hands-on clinical experience under the mentorship of a Diplomate of the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery based at a high-volume private practice in Center City, Pennsylvania. The practice is a Category 1 facility, fully equipped for general anesthesia. The fellowship is designed for board-certified or board-eligible Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons seeking to refine their expertise in anesthesia delivery and advanced outpatient surgical management.

The fellowship emphasizes the development of advanced clinical judgment, precision anesthesia administration, and efficient management of a wide variety of surgical and anesthetic cases, including those involving high-risk, pediatric, and special needs patient populations.

Program Structure

This one-year paid fellowship provides an immersive experience in both clinical and didactic training:

• Clinical Exposure: The fellow will participate in approximately 4,000 anesthetic cases throughout the year.
• Anesthesia Techniques: Fellows will gain experience in a broad range of anesthesia modalities, including:
  • Total Intravenous Anesthesia (TIVA)
  • Breathe-down techniques
  • General Endotracheal Anesthesia (GETA)
  • Combination IV + Laryngeal Mask Airway (LMA) techniques
  • Intramuscular (IM) and Intraosseous (IO) anesthesia administration
  • Difficult Airway Cases

The practice provides a high daily case volume, offering unparalleled exposure to outpatient anesthesia and surgical care within a private practice setting.

Didactic Curriculum

The educational component of the fellowship includes one hour of formal didactic training each week, featuring:

• Structured lectures on anesthesia principles, pharmacology, airway management, and outpatient oral surgery.
• One-on-one board exam preparation sessions with a Board-Certified Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon if applicable.
• Case-based learning discussions emphasizing risk assessment, medical management, and anesthesia complications.

Clinical Focus Areas

Throughout the program, fellows will gain direct experience managing a diverse range of cases and anesthetic scenarios, including:

• Sedation and general anesthesia for complex outpatient oral surgery.
• Anesthetic management of pediatric, geriatric, and medically compromised patients.
• Perioperative management and monitoring in the outpatient environment.
• Key clinical procedures include:
  • Dentoalveolar Surgery: Develop expertise in performing various types of extractions, including impacted wisdom teeth and surgical extractions, pre-prosthetic surgery, Orthodontic exposures, and management of oro-facial infections.
  • Implant Placement: Learn to plan and surgically place dental implants, addressing tooth loss and edentulous areas.
  • Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology: Gain insights into diagnosing and managing oral and maxillofacial pathologies, including cysts, tumors, and other lesions of the oral cavity.
  • Orthognathic Surgery: Acquire skills in the diagnosis of dentofacial deformities and learn more about orthognathic surgery to correct these deformities, improving both aesthetic and function.
  • Trauma and Reconstruction: Learn to manage facial trauma and perform reconstructive procedures for patients with injuries. TMJ Disorder Cases: Evaluating and treating patients with temporomandibular joint disorders.
    

This experience provides fellows with a deep understanding of outpatient surgical workflow, safety protocols, and patient selection in a high-efficiency setting.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of the fellowship, participants will be able to:

• Confidently administer and manage multiple anesthesia modalities in outpatient settings.
• Safely evaluate and treat patients with elevated anesthetic and surgical risk.
• Demonstrate mastery of airway management, emergency preparedness, and pharmacologic control.
• Integrate evidence-based practices into outpatient anesthesia and surgical care.
• Strengthen board preparation and enhance readiness for independent practice.

Eligibility Requirements

Applicants must meet the following criteria:

• Be a Board-Certified or Board-Eligible Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon .
• Hold an active dental or medical license in good standing (or be eligible for licensure in Pennsylvania).
• Demonstrate strong clinical skills, professionalism, and a commitment to advancing outpatient anesthesia safety and care.
