Analytical & Metallographic Instrumentation Field Engineer
Shape the customer experience for world-class lab instruments
LECO has been building trust for more than 80 years as a family-owned innovator in laboratory instrumentation. From our headquarters in St. Joseph, Michigan, we design and manufacture analytical and metallographic systems used across the globe. As an Analytical & Metallographic Instrumentation Field Engineer, you’ll be the on-site expert who keeps those systems performing at their best—directly at our customers’ locations.
How you’ll work
- Full-time, remote role with regular travel
- Most days are spent at customer facilities; travel can extend up to five days per week, with up to four overnight hotel stays (Monday–Friday)
- Primary territory: Pennsylvania, Ohio, Upstate New York, and West Virginia, with occasional trips to nearby states as needed
- Ideal home base: Western Pennsylvania or Eastern Ohio
A day in the life
Morning: You arrive at a customer site, review service logs, and run diagnostics on a metallographic system. By mid-day, you’ve implemented a corrective repair and verified performance. Afternoon: You install an upgrade kit on an analytical instrument, then guide the customer through best practices, software workflows, and maintenance routines. Throughout, you document your work and ensure every step aligns with LECO’s ISO accreditation.
What you’ll do
- Deliver preventive and general maintenance, troubleshoot issues, and perform corrective repairs on analytical and metallographic instruments
- Install new instruments, apply updates, and implement upgrade kits
- Train users on operational theory, software use, and routine care
- Ensure all service activities conform to LECO’s ISO-accredited standards
What you’ll bring
- Self-driven mindset with clear, professional communication (written and verbal)
- Commitment to safety and customer site protocols; a polished, professional presence
- Strong attention to detail and excellent organizational habits
- Willingness to attend factory training in St. Joseph, MI for approximately 3–5 months
- On-the-job field training alongside experienced LECO engineers across the U.S.
- Participation in annual service training at LECO headquarters
- Comfort with frequent travel and up to four overnight stays per week (Mon–Fri)
- Valid driver’s license with a clean driving record
- Should have a personal credit card, or the ability to obtain one
- Mechanical aptitude and familiarity with AC/DC electronics—or the ability to learn quickly
- Chemistry or military experience is a plus, not a requirement
Education and pathways
- Two-year technical degree or trade school
- Prior military training in a technical discipline
- Equivalent hands-on experience or technical training
Legal and compliance
- EOE M/F/VET/Disability
- Pass a background check and substance abuse screenings
- Must be authorized to work in the US without restriction
