Water Crew Member
Position Overview: We are hiring a part-time, seasonal Water Crew Member to work in our water program for the 2026 season. Our water-based program’s objective is to clean up illegally dumped trash and debris in rivers, creeks and storm drains in Allegheny County to provide healthy water and to help mitigate flooding for everyone. This includes the Tireless Project, which cleans up riverbanks and streams with our fleet of three boats, GrateKeepers that uses a stewardship model to clear debris from storm drains and education/outreach to inform communities about the effect of trash on watershed environments. The water-based program operates as a two-person crew with support of volunteers and community groups during the water season, from April to October.
Primary Responsibilities
- Collaborate with the Program Coordinator to conduct thorough assessments, coordinate seasonal clean-up schedules, plan and facilitate engaging events, and monitor/mitigate instances of illegally dumped debris in Allegheny County waterways
- Support the Program Coordinator in operating and upkeep of ACW’s fleet of watercrafts, ensuring functionality and readiness for cleanup activities
- Act as liaison between residents and ACW, fostering positive relationships
- Drive engagement and participation in ACW programs by recruiting new volunteers through outreach events
- Assist in training Tireless Project and GrateKeeper volunteers on how to safely and efficiently remove illegally debris from waterways
- Uphold ACW’s values, integrity and reputation while representing the organization in community settings
- Participate in staff meetings as necessary
- Support land-based cleanup operations during the off-season or as needed, including debris removal, volunteer events, and site prep.
- Other tasks as necessary, may support non-water-related duties during peak periods
Qualifications & Skills
Required:
- Possess a clean driving record and the ability (or willingness to learn) to drive and operate all ACW land and water vehicles throughout Allegheny County in all types of weather conditions
- Must be able and willing to work outdoors in all types of weather conditions and challenging terrain
- Must be able to work cooperatively with colleagues and community members
- Must prioritize tasks effectively and efficiently
- Must be able to safely lift 50 pounds or more over a span of three or more hours
- Basic computer skills, including Excel, Outlook and databases
- Must be able to provide own transportation to the Allegheny CleanWays office and satellite locations
Preferred:
- Prior clean-up and/or outdoor work experience
- CPR and First Aid training
- Ability to operate motorized watercrafts
- Power tools and large or small equipment are desirable skills but not required
