Mural Arts Philadelphia is the nation’s largest public art program, rooted in the belief that art ignites change. Through innovative collaborations with artists, communities, and civic partners, we use public art to drive equity, economic development, and personal and social transformation across the city. With an annual budget of over $10 million, our work spans youth education, restorative justice, behavioral health, and community engagement.
Position Overview
We are seeking an experienced and strategic Director of Finance to lead the financial stewardship of Mural Arts Philadelphia during a time of growth and evolution. Reporting to the Chief Operating Officer (COO) and serving as the Treasurer of the Board, this executive role offers a unique opportunity to shape the financial future of one of Philadelphia’s most impactful non-profits.
As a member of the Executive Team, the Director of Finance is responsible for driving long-term financial planning, ensuring operational excellence, and fostering a culture of transparency and accountability. You’ll oversee finance, audit, risk, compliance, and systems—while leading and mentoring a committed finance team.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead all budgeting, accounting, financial analysis, forecasting, reporting, and audit functions.
- Advise the Executive Team and Board on long-term financial strategy, risk, and sustainability.
- Supervise and develop a four-person finance team with a focus on collaboration and capacity-building.
- Oversee all grant and contract compliance, including financial reporting to funders.
- Maintain sound internal controls, clear cost allocations, and strong fiscal policies.
- Guide cross-departmental financial literacy to support program impact and fiscal discipline.
- Manage relationships with banks, auditors, insurance providers, and external partners.
- Oversee annual audit, 990 preparation, and adherence to GAAP and federal compliance requirements.
- Support strategic initiatives with data-driven financial modeling and scenario planning.
- Partner with the COO on risk management and benefits strategy (not administration).
- Collaborate with external IT consultants to ensure system functionality and security.
Ideal Candidate Profile
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field required; CPA or Master’s preferred .
- 10+ years of progressive financial leadership, with nonprofit or mission-driven experience strongly preferred.
- Demonstrated success managing finances for budgets of $7M or more , with a strong track record in strategic planning and forecasting.
- Deep knowledge of nonprofit GAAP, OMB Uniform Guidance , and funder compliance.
- Experience supervising and mentoring teams in a collaborative, growth-oriented environment .
- Skilled communicator, able to translate complex financials into accessible insights.
- Proficiency in financial systems and tools; Sage and Salesforce familiarity a plus.
- High emotional intelligence, professional integrity, and a commitment to social impact.
