A Tennessee public school middle school volleyball head coach is primarily responsible for managing all aspects of the school's volleyball program, instructing student-athletes in fundamental skills, and ensuring strict compliance with Tennessee Middle School Athletic Association (TMSAA) and Tennessee Secondary School Athletic Association (TSSAA) rules. The head coach promotes teamwork, academic eligibility, and sportsmanship while fostering an extension of the general classroom environment.

Core Job Responsibilities

• Program Management: Conduct team tryouts, assess player skills, assign positions, and determine final roster selections.
• Instruction & Strategy: Teach fundamental volleyball techniques, rules, and game strategies through organized practice sessions and matches.
• Scheduling & Operations: Coordinate regular practice schedules, manage uniform and equipment inventory, and submit official team rosters through the TSSAA Portal.
• Student Supervision: Maintain accountability and safety for all athletes during practices, matches, and travel, including locker room monitoring.
• Academic & Compliance Tracking: Monitor the academic performance of team members to ensure they meet local school board and TMSAA eligibility requirements.
• Stakeholder Communication: Maintain professional channels of communication with school administration, the athletic director, parents, and community stakeholders.

Mandated State (TSSAA/TMSAA) Qualifications

Tennessee separates coach classifications into faculty and non-faculty roles, both of which require specific certifications

• Minimum Education: Must possess at least a high school diploma or GED equivalent.
• State Registration: Must be registered with the TSSAA annually by the school administration.
• Mandatory Coaching Education: Non-faculty and classified employee coaches must complete the NFHS "Fundamentals of Coaching" and "First Aid, Health, & Safety for Coaches" courses before starting the position.
• Rules Meetings: The head coach (or designated school athletic director) must attend or complete the annual state volleyball rules meeting online before the date of the first permitted contest.

Physical and Environmental Requirements

• Physical Stamina: Ability to stand, move, and demonstrate athletic techniques for extended periods on a gym court floor.
• Lifting Capacity: Routinely lift and move heavy athletic equipment, ball carts, and nets weighing up to 25–50 pounds.
• Schedule Flexibility: Availability to work irregular hours, primarily afternoons, evenings, and occasional weekends for away games and tournaments.
