Allegheny Family Network (AFN) is seeking an experienced, strategic, and highly skilled Controller to oversee all financial operations of our growing nonprofit organization. With approximately 49 employees and multiple funding sources, AFN requires a collaborative financial leader who can ensure fiscal integrity, strengthen internal controls, maintain compliance, and provide sound financial guidance to executive leadership and the Board of Directors.

This is a critical leadership position for a hands-on professional with exceptional nonprofit accounting expertise, audit experience, and a deep understanding of government-funded human services programs. The ideal candidate will have experience managing contracts and funding from the Allegheny County Department of Human Services (DHS), Children, Youth and Families (CYF), behavioral health programs, grants, and other public funding sources.

The Controller will serve as the organization's financial expert, ensuring the long-term financial sustainability of AFN while supporting our mission of strengthening and empowering families.

Key Responsibilities

Financial Leadership & Strategy

  • Lead all financial operations, accounting functions, and fiscal management activities.
  • Serve as a strategic financial advisor to the Executive Director and Board of Directors.
  • Prepare, analyze, and present monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reports.
  • Monitor organizational financial performance and recommend strategies to strengthen fiscal health.
  • Develop financial forecasts and guide long-term financial planning.
Budgeting & Financial Management

  • Lead the annual budgeting process for the organization and its programs.
  • Monitor revenues, expenses, and cash flow to ensure financial stability.
  • Provide budget-to-actual analysis and recommendations to leadership.
  • Support program leaders in managing grant-funded and contract-funded budgets.
Government Funding & Contract Compliance

  • Manage all financial aspects of county, state, federal, and foundation-funded programs.
  • Ensure compliance with DHS, CYF, and other funding agency requirements.
  • Oversee contract billing, reimbursement requests, financial reporting, and grant tracking.
  • Maintain accurate allocation of restricted and unrestricted funding.
  • Assist leadership in developing program budgets and funding proposals.
Audit & Compliance

  • Lead all annual audit activities and serve as the primary contact for external auditors.
  • Prepare schedules, reconciliations, and supporting documentation.
  • Oversee preparation of Form 990 and other regulatory filings.
  • Maintain strong internal controls and financial policies that meet nonprofit best practices.
  • Ensure compliance with GAAP, nonprofit accounting standards, and funding regulations.
Accounting Operations

  • Oversee accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, general ledger, and month-end/year-end closing processes.
  • Ensure timely and accurate financial reporting.
  • Supervise accounting staff and external financial partners as needed.
  • Evaluate and improve financial systems and processes to increase efficiency and accuracy.
Qualifications

Required

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, Finance, or related field.
  • Minimum of 7 years of accounting and financial management experience.
  • Minimum of 5 years of nonprofit financial leadership experience.
  • Demonstrated experience managing government contracts, grants, and nonprofit funding.
  • Strong knowledge of nonprofit fund accounting and financial reporting.
  • Proven experience leading annual audits and maintaining audit readiness.
  • Exceptional analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel and accounting software.
Preferred

  • CPA designation strongly preferred.
  • Experience with DHS, CYF, behavioral health, or human services funding.
  • Experience with Single Audits and Uniform Guidance compliance.
  • Experience presenting financial information to executive leadership and Boards of Directors.
  • Knowledge of QuickBooks, Sage Intacct, or similar nonprofit accounting systems.
