ROLE OF THE CHAIR

Reporting jointly to the Dean of the School of Medicine and the President of the University of Pittsburgh Physicians (UPP), the Chair of the Department of Radiology provides leadership across all aspects of the Department's mission: clinical care, research, and education. The Chair is responsible for guiding faculty, staff, and trainees while working closely with institutional leaders within the School of Medicine and UPMC. They will oversee section chiefs and vice chairs, including those responsible for quality assurance and strategic development, community radiology, clinical and translational research, and education.

The Chair holds both academic and service line leadership responsibilities across a complex, geographically distributed enterprise. The Department's structure-with approximately half of faculty in the academic core and half serving in the clinical division-creates distinctive opportunities and considerations around operational alignment, technology deployment, workforce models, and compensation frameworks. How the Chair chooses to approach these dimensions will shape the Department's future trajectory and culture.

The field of radiology is experiencing a significant transformation, driven by advances in artificial intelligence, precision imaging, and interventional techniques. The University of Pittsburgh's research strengths and UPMC's clinical scale provide substantial resources for innovation in imaging science. QUALIFICATIONS AND CHARACTERISTICS

The successful candidate must possess an MD, MD/PhD, or equivalent clinical doctoral degree with board certification in radiology and an academic record meriting appointment at the rank of Professor with tenure at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. This position requires a visionary leader with demonstrated excellence across the tripartite mission who can navigate the complexities of managing one of the nation's largest academic radiology enterprises while fostering innovation and collaboration across diverse practice environments. While no one person will embody every one of these qualities, Pitt and UPMC seek the following criteria in the next Chair of Radiology:
• Leadership experience that demonstrates the capability to manage complex academic and clinical operations at scale, including distributed teams and diverse practice settings
• A demonstrated commitment to advancing research infrastructure and a record of supporting basic, translational, and clinical science
• Leadership experience in complex academic health systems with an understanding of the operational, financial, and strategic dimensions of department-level management
• A track record of building interdisciplinary and collaborative relationships across clinical departments or research teams
• Familiarity with emerging technologies in radiology and their potential impact on clinical practice, research, and education
• Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills with proven ability to inspire confidence, drive organizational change, and lead culture transformation across diverse constituencies
• Strong commitment to faculty recruitment, retention, and career development, with experience mentoring across academic ranks and/or practice types
• A commitment to educational innovation, with demonstrated support of training programs that prepare the next generation of radiology leaders
• An entrepreneurial mindset with an understanding of financial sustainability, strategic partnerships, and growth strategies in academic medicine.
