Senior Highway/Traffic Engineer
Position Summary
We are looking for an experienced Senior Highway Traffic Engineer to lead and manage key transportation projects for major clients such as PennDOT, the Turnpike, and other public and private stakeholders. The ideal candidate will bring 12 to 15 years of experience in traffic engineering, client management, and project supervision. In this role, you will oversee staff, collaborate with clients, and drive the design, analysis, and implementation of traffic systems that enhance road safety and efficiency.
Salary Range - $120k to $140k
Client will pay more depending on experience.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead and manage traffic engineering projects for high-profile clients, including PennDOT, Turnpike, and other municipal or state agencies.
- Provide expert leadership in the design, analysis, and implementation of traffic systems, including highway design, traffic signal optimization, and congestion management.
- Supervise and mentor a team of engineers and technical staff, ensuring effective project execution, professional development, and adherence to engineering standards.
- Directly manage client relationships, including regular communication, progress updates, and resolution of any issues related to ongoing projects.
- Conduct and review traffic impact studies, safety assessments, and traffic flow analyses to inform design decisions and operational improvements.
- Develop and implement traffic management plans, transportation studies, and transportation models, including intersection and corridor analysis.
- Review technical reports, specifications, and design documents to ensure compliance with industry standards, including AASHTO, MUTCD, and local/state regulations.
- Oversee the preparation of proposals, technical documentation, and presentations for clients and regulatory agencies.
- Ensure projects are delivered on time, within budget, and to the highest quality standards, while managing multiple priorities.
- Stay updated on the latest traffic engineering trends, technology, and best practices in the industry.

Qualifications & Skills
- Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, Traffic Engineering, or a related field. A Master’s degree is a plus.
- Professional Engineer (PE) license is required.
- 12–15 years of experience in highway/traffic engineering, including at least 5 years in a supervisory or management role.
- Proven experience managing large-scale transportation projects with notable clients, such as PennDOT, Turnpike, or similar agencies.
- Strong supervisory experience, with the ability to lead teams, mentor junior engineers, and manage day-to-day operations.
- Exceptional client management skills with experience in building and maintaining long-term relationships with key stakeholders.
- Proficient in traffic analysis software such as Synchro, VISSIM, or other traffic modeling tools.
- Knowledge of key transportation standards and guidelines, including AASHTO, MUTCD, and local/state requirements.
- Strong project management abilities, including budget oversight, scheduling, and resource allocation.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to present complex ideas clearly to clients, teams, and regulatory agencies.
- Strong analytical skills, with the ability to solve complex traffic engineering problems and identify opportunities for improvement.
