About the Role
The Planned Giving Manager is a member of the WHYY advancement team who cultivates and manages all aspects of the planned giving program, including developing the strategy for the planned giving donor pipeline, organizing and creating a strategy for marketing planned gifts, and managing the estate administration process. The individual is responsible for managing the Planned Giving and Mid-Level Officer position.
The Planned Giving Manager will develop and implement plans for securing major gifts and deferred gifts from donors through estate planning, charitable gift annuities, IRAs, and other types of gifts. Working closely with the Director of Philanthropy and senior executive staff, this position will develop and position planned giving as a critical component to WHYY’s strategic fundraising plan.
MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Develop and execute strategies for identifying, researching, cultivating and soliciting pertinent prospects for planned gifts, in cooperation and collaboration with the Gift Officers.
- Manages and works closely with the position of Planned Giving and Mid-Level Officer to review prospect leads and increase the pipeline for planned giving, mid-level, and major gifts.
- Manages marketing strategy, calendar, marketing vendor relationships, and annual planned giving marketing campaigns such as legacy challenges. Reviews and writes marketing materials and communications for the planned giving program.
- Design and conduct direct mail and marketing campaigns to target planned gifts in partnership and coordination with leaders in WHYY’s major gifts, membership, and marketing departments.
- Offers educational opportunities via webinars, in-person events, and materials regarding planned giving for fellow staff and prospects/donors.
- Provides stewardship of approximately 200 donors who are considering a planned gift to WHYY or have already declared a legacy commitment.
- Generates program reports for organizational leaders, executive staff, and WHYY board of directors.
- Respond to inquiries and meet with prospects to better understand their needs.
- Cultivate relationships with attorneys, trusts officers, financial planners and other estate planning professionals regarding gift opportunities for clients.
- Research and maintain individual donor profiles on qualified prospects and donors.
- Create illustrations and contracts for WHYY Charitable Gift Annuities and manage the annuity pool in partnership with WHYY’s finance department as well as our fiduciary partner at Wilmington Trust.
- Solicit mid and major gifts from the portfolio of donors (as appropriate)
- Draft annual expenses and anticipated revenue for planned giving as part of the overall Major Gifts budget.
- Project manage all aspects of the Estate Administration process, from coordination with attorneys and personal representatives to internally coordinating paperwork and financial transfers in partnership with WHYY CFO and Executive staff.
- Coordinate annual Laurence LePage Society donor thank you event and stewardship plan for all members of the LePage Society.
- Maintains a regular and predictable attendance in alignment with WHYY’s schedule.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Education: A Bachelor’s degree in a related discipline, including but not limited to finance or law. Knowledge of estate planning, Charitable Gift Annuities, including wills, trusts and estate and gift tax laws. The incumbent must also know the legal record keeping requirements for fundraising and documenting donations and gifts.
Experience: A minimum of five to seven years’ progressively responsible, professional experience in development and/or planned giving and fundraising. Must have the demonstrated ability and track record to cultivate and solicit high net worth individuals and their advisors.
Technical Skills: Proficient use of Microsoft Office software and familiarity with membership-related databases.
