Position Overview

The Bellefonte Area School District is seeking a caring and adaptable Healthroom Assistant -- Special Education to serve as a floating nurse across the district. This role supports building nurses and private agency nurses in delivering essential health services to identified students. It's a meaningful opportunity to make a daily impact on students' well-being in a collaborative and inclusive educational environment.

Key Responsibilities

The Healthroom Assistant will:

  • Render basic first aid and emergency care to students for illnesses, injuries, and life threatening situations in accordance with district guidelines.
  • Assess injuries and notify the certified school nurse of any injury requiring medical or dental intervention or immediate absence from school and complete student accident report per District policy.
  • Screen students who present symptoms of communicable diseases and exclude them from school when necessary.
  • Examine students returning to school following an illness or communicable disease when necessary.
  • Administer medication as per district guidelines and as prescribed by an authorized Health Care provider (prescriber) and parent permission
  • Performs specialized procedures as retained and delegated by the school nurse, including diabetic glucose monitoring, carbohydrate counting, insulin dosage calculation, small-volume nebulizer treatment, urinary catheterization, etc.
  • Inform parents/guardians of student illnesses and injuries according to First Aid and Emergency guidelines for School Staff.
  • Assist the certified school nurse in scheduling and charting state-mandated health screenings.
  • Schedule students for various screening procedures and for medical examinations as directed by the certified school nurse.
  • Record all visits to the health room on an electronic health record, communicate with certified school nurse regarding significant student concerns; refer information when required.
  • Assist the certified school nurse with state-mandated programs and charting for each student assigned.
  • Perform clerical duties in support of health care services; maintain an electronic health record of all health care treatments and activities; prepare a paper health record for new students and maintain a paper and electronic health record for each student, file and preserve the confidentiality of health care records.
  • Assists with Health Office infection control practices; maintains cleanliness, supplies, and equipment of sick/well rooms.
  • Stocks and reorders first aid supplies (i.e. bandaids, tongue depressors, etc.); assists in maintaining first aid kit/supplies, trauma kit, and evacuation cart/system under direction of the school nurse.
  • Schedule is subject to change as needed.
  • Participate in School or District Committee as directed by School Principal (i.e. SAP).
  • Perform such tasks, consistent with the position, as may be assigned.

Education Requirements

Minimum:

  • Graduation from an accredited school of nursing, college, or practical nursing program

Preferred:

  • Specialized training in pediatric or school-based care

Experience Requirements

Minimum:

  • Experience working with school-age children

Preferred:

  • Ability to remain composed and supportive during emergencies

  • Strong interpersonal skills and a cooperative approach with parents and staff

  • Positive attitude and commitment to student care

Certifications & Licenses

Required:

  • Current license as aRegistered Nurse or Practical Nurse in Pennsylvania

Able to hear with 40 decibel loss maximum and see with acuity of 20 inches or less and far acuity of at least 20 feet normal depth perception, field of vision and accommodation. Must be able to reach above and below the waist, walk and use fingers to pick, feel and grasp objects. Requires use of both hands for repetitive motion. Some bending and twisting of the body required. Lifts/carries supplies and papers weighing no more than 40 lbs. Typical office environment with the ability to sit eighty percent (80%) of workday.
