General Description/Position Purpose

SHIPPENSBURG UNIVERSITY

The Department of Counselor Education seeks qualified applicants to fill a full-time, tenure-track Assistant Professor faculty position beginning Fall 2026.

Candidate Responsibilities: The successful applicant must be well prepared to assume responsibilities of the professoriate in general - teaching, service, and scholarship, and more specifically, as a counselor educator. The department is program-oriented but seeks a candidate who can teach generalist courses in addition to mastery of courses across all of the department's program specializations. Responsibilities also include advising students, supervising students in clinical courses, service to the department, college, and university, and generating new knowledge via conducting research and professional presentations. The applicant will also advise doctoral students and participate in dissertation committees along with teaching doctoral level courses based on their experience. In addition, faculty members are expected to perform other duties as assigned in compliance with the collective bargaining agreement.

All master's level program specializations offer classes in the late afternoons and evenings. Thus, teaching assignments may include nights and/or weekends. The Department of Counselor Education is a face-to-face program supplemented with hybrid or distance modalities (both synchronous and asynchronous). Additional teaching opportunities are also available during summer terms and for weekend and evening-based certificate programs. Doctoral courses are taught on Saturdays at an off-campus location.

The University and the Counselor Education Department. Shippensburg University is one of 10 public universities in the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education (PASSHE) and located in south central Pennsylvania with easy driving distances to Pittsburgh, Philadelphia, and Washington, D.C. Shippensburg University is proud to have one of the oldest established counseling programs in the nation. Housed within the College of Education and Human Services, the Department of Counselor Education teaches the skills necessary for the professional practice of counseling and student affairs work through its master's, doctoral, and certificate programs. The department offers three master's-level programs (Clinical Mental Health Counseling (M.S.), School Counseling (M.Ed.), and College Counseling/Student Affairs (M.S.)) as well as a doctoral program in Counselor Education and Supervision (Ed.D.) that are all accredited by the Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP). The department also runs a community counseling clinic that serves residents in the region.

Mission Statement. Now in its 63rd year, the Department of Counselor Education prepares highly effective professional practitioners who are ethical and culturally competent. We emphasize development of the whole person by grounding learners in current research, direct experience, personal development, and social equity. Graduates possess a strong identity as counselors and student affairs professionals.

Minimum Qualifications

Applicants must possess at the time of application an earned doctorate (Ph.D. or Ed.D.) in Counselor Education from an accredited institution, preferably from a CACREP-accredited program; or have a related doctoral degree and have been employed as a full-time faculty member in a counselor education program for a minimum of one full academic year before July 1, 2013. As part of a successful on-campus interview process, candidates will be expected to provide a demonstration of teaching effectiveness, evidence of understanding diverse populations, and the ability to work collegially with department members and the campus community.

Preferred Qualifications

The ideal candidate will have a broad range of experiences in clinical mental health counseling specifically the K-16 educational pipeline as well as supervision. Preference will be given to Licensed Professional Counselors (or license-eligible) in the state of PA. Successful applicants must show sustained participation in professional activities, scholarly activities, and service to the counseling profession. This can be showcased several ways: sustained memberships in professional counseling organizations; relevant professional counseling credentials; ongoing counseling practice, and/or research and scholarly activity in counseling commensurate with the faculty role. The ideal candidate will have a strong focus on face-to-face teaching as well as virtual/online teaching modalities, demonstration of knowledge of, sensitivity to, and ability to work effectively with, the educational needs of individuals and groups with a diverse range of identities, cultures, backgrounds, and abilities; and evidence of responsiveness to and understanding of the racial, socioeconomic, academic, and cultural diversity of the students in the Department of Counselor Education.
