POSITION SUMMARY:
As a member of our Safety & Risk Management Department, this position requires knowledge of workers’ compensation to independently investigate, evaluate and resolve claims in order to achieve appropriate outcomes. Administer and resolve claims in a timely manner in accordance with legal statutes, insurance policy provisions, and company guidelines. Additionally assist in the development and implementation of corporate safety programs and procedures as well as with the operating functions of the Safety Department. Support the Division Managers in adhering to federal and state DOT and OSHA safety regulations and other contractual requirements to ensure a safe, healthy, and accident-free work environment. Assist with our Drug & Alcohol testing procedures on a regular basis.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Organize and educate front line supervisors or designees to respond and to investigate workers’ compensation claims
- Promptly investigate all workers’ compensation claims with minimal supervision
- Document all required information and process all necessary reports and paperwork in a timely matter
- Communicate with physicians, supervisors, employees and attorneys regarding illnesses or injuries related to employment; and perform related research, analysis, and other professional administrative work in support of assigned functions
- Assist injured employees with initiating and maintaining workers' compensation claims and related benefits; advise employees of their rights and benefits under the law
- Determine coverage, compensability, potential for subrogation recovery, and second injury fund
- Alert Supervisor and report to workers’ compensation carrier any suspected fraud
- Establish and implement appropriate action plans for case resolution including medical and disability management (return to work), litigation management, negotiation and final disposition
- Manage workers’ compensation carrier’s performance and effectiveness by state and monitor provider panels
- Ensure timely denial or payment of benefits in accordance with jurisdictional requirements
- Negotiate claims settlements with supervisory approval
- Maintain a working knowledge of jurisdictional requirements and applicable case law for each state the organization operates in
- Provide a high degree of customer service to Operations including face to face interactions, stewardship meetings with management and insurance carriers
- Develop monthly metrics and report out on the following: open claims status, reporting timeliness, engagement with Operations, training, safety committee activity, regulatory compliance, and other items deemed necessary for effective claims management
- Conduct safety audits and safety meetings
- Ensure employee safety compliance and investigate ergonomic or unsafe workplace complaints
- Work closely with the Safety Manager to provide random substance, drug & alcohol testing for employees in safety sensitive roles to ensure adherence to our internal policies

QUALIFICATIONS:
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Excellent customer relationship skills
- At least 3 years’ experience handling lost time workers compensation claims required
- Experience with insurance renewals required; worker’s compensation and automobile insurance preferred
- Demonstrate technical proficiency through timely, consistent execution of best claim practices. Strong organizational skills with demonstrated ability to work independently and deal effectively with multiple tasks simultaneously
- Proven critical thinking skills that demonstrate analysis/judgment and sound decision making with focus on attention to details
- Proficient with MS Office Product Suite – especially, but not limited to, Excel
- Ability to handle and maintain confidential information
- Ability to travel for business purposes to other locations including, but not limited to, PA, NJ, & DE
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Ability to reach; climb stairs; bend & kneel to conduct inspections and workplace accident investigations
- Periodically lifting objects weighing 10-20 lbs.
EDUCATION:
- Bachelor’s Degree or Equivalent
- Associate in Claims (AIC) Designation or similar professional designation desired
SAFETY SENSITIVE STATUS:
This job is not considered Safety-Sensitive. However, if the incumbent either holds a Safety-Sensitive credential and / or performs Safety-Sensitive duties, they will be subject to random substance, drug and alcohol testing.
