BASIC FUNCTION:
Under the direction shop supervisor, plant manager and/or designee, the Painter/Prep Worker prepares parts and truck bodies for blasting, sanding, priming and painting in order to achieve the quality finish appearance required. The Painter/Prep Worker will complete the preparation and painting process and related activities as provided for GapVax, Inc. In addition to the prep and paint process the Painter Prep Worker will perform designated quality control functions, inventory control, training of new staff and general shop maintenance as directed. The Paint / Prep Worker will perform these functions in safe and efficient manner.

Painting/ Prep Working Competencies and Job Tasks

Prep:
• Remove accessories, such as chrome or mirrors, from vehicles.
• Repair imperfections, nicks, dents, and blemishes in the metal with body filler.
• Mask off surfaces with plastic and masking tape and paper to protect surfaces during painting.
• Read work orders or receive instructions from supervisors to determine work requirements.
• Read job orders and inspect work pieces to determine work procedures and materials required.
• Prepare various metal surfaces for painting using grinders, sanders, and solvents accordingly.
• Hang parts on appropriate carts and racks.
Paint Application:
• Mix paint to match color specifications or vehicles’ original colors, stirring or thinning paints, using spatulas or power mixing equipment.
• Select paint according to company requirements and match paint colors, following specified color charts.
• Spray prepared surfaces with specified amounts of primers and top coatings using spray guns and paint brushes.
• Pour paint into spray guns and adjust nozzles and paint mixes for proper paint flow and coating thickness.
• Disassemble, clean, and reassemble sprayers or power equipment, using solvents, wire brushers, and cloths.
• Select the correct spray gun system for the material being applied.
• Inspect painted surfaces for light spots and runs, informing foreman of any defects.
• Calculate amounts of required materials based on the surface to be painted.
• Read job orders and inspect work pieces to determine work procedures and materials required.
• Place coated work pieces in spray booth for the paint application and to bake for specified times for finishes to harden.
• Observe machine gauges and equipment operation to detect defects or deviations from standards, and make adjustments as necessary.
• Determine paint viscosity by using viscosity cups.
• Weigh or measure chemicals, coatings, or paints before adding them to machines.
• Set up and operate machines to print or coat products with paint.
• Record paint usage data on specified forms.


Clean-up:
• Dispose of hazardous waste in an appropriate manner.
• Read MDS sheets and other safety related literature in order to determine work requirements.


Inspection:
• Inspect painted surfaces for light spots and runs, informing foreman of any defects.
• Examine finished surfaces of work pieces to verify conformance to specifications and retouch any defective areas.


Equipment and Tools
• Understand and operate the following tools according to the safety policy: forklift, cranes, touch mix computer system, straight screwdrivers, Phillips screw drivers, sockets, ratchets, hammer, chisels, blow guns, paint guns, grinders, sanders, media blasters, sandblasters, airless spray equipment, pressure washers, aerial lifts, high velocity low pressure HVLP spraying equipment, spray guns, pressure washers, soft bristled brushers, specialty paint brushes, compressed air systems, air-assisted spraying systems, power buffers, dollies, hand files, portable grinders, and cutting torches.


Fork Lift / Crane
• Understand and operate the forklift and cranes according to safety policy
Cooperation
• Work with purchasing and inventory and to procure needed supplies
• Present accurate and time and material information to accounting
• Work with foreman to paint and prepare parts for the paint application
• Work with safety manager in order to maintain a safe working environment


Policies/Procedures
• Follow safety personal protective equipment policy
• Observe scheduled work hours and maintain appropriate attendance according to policy
• Comply with Drug & Alcohol policies


General
• Maintain requirements of personnel file including participation in required safety training
• Accept and respond to constructive feedback and comply with directives from supervisor
