The Clinical Veterinarian (Sr. or Associate) exists to support the Animal Care and Use program at Temple University in support of research initiatives involving animal use. Within the University Laboratory Animal Resources (ULAR) department, the Clinical Veterinarian provides professional veterinary care, enforces the humane care and use of research animal colonies, and may serve as acting University Attending Veterinarian in his/her absence. Major responsibilities of the Clinical Veterinarian include the provision of hands-on clinical care for all animals under the care of ULAR (i.e. mice, rats, dogs, cats, sheep, pigs, aquatics, reptiles, etc.) and participates as needed with research procedural support to include research related surgical procedures. The Clinical Veterinarian will perform veterinary exams, diagnostic tests, and maintain the health of the colony. The Clinical Veterinarian will be responsible for providing care to all research animals in assigned facilities, including the observation of animals, diagnosis and treatment of clinical conditions, prescription and monitoring of necessary medications, and maintenance of animal health records. Supervision of technical staff during clinical work, oversight of regulatory compliance, consultation and training for animal users, and limited teaching of graduate and professional students, as required.
This position also performs quality assurance for campus animal facilities; serves as a member of the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) and other committees as assigned; reviews (pre- and post- review) animal use protocols as needed; and assists investigators in the development of their research protocols. The position requires working knowledge and experience with essential laboratory animal husbandry responsibilities and techniques. The Clinical Veterinarian should be comfortable with clinical oversight of a variety of species in addition to, but not limited to preventative health, colony management, medical treatments, general anesthesia and euthanasia procedures, and other duties as appropriate. The Clinical Veterinarian is expected to provide care of laboratory animals in a safe, humane, and sanitary manner using equipment and established procedures, including safe handling of animals, materials, and equipment exposed to hazardous (biohazardous, radiological or chemical) agents. The Clinical Veterinarian is required to follow standard operating procedures and maintain compliance with internal policies, applicable laws, and regulations as a leader and role model for staff within the University Laboratory Animal Resources (ULAR) department and the research enterprise. Required Education and Experience
*VMD/DVM from an accredited US School of Veterinary Medicine.
*Veterinary Licensure in PA (or ability to attain license within 3 mo. of hire)
*Grade T28 Clinical Veterinarian (Associate): 0-4 years' experience in lab animal medicine in the academic/non-profit/government/industry setting.
*Grade T29 Clinical Veterinarian (Sr.) 5 years' experience in lab animal medicine in the academic/non-profit/government/industry setting.
*Ability to obtain a practitioner's DEA license within 6-9 months of employment.
*Demonstrated experience in providing large animal anesthesia/surgical support services. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered. *Demonstrated verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills
*Proficient in verbal and written English, mathematics, word processing, spreadsheets, e-mail
*Display a customer-focused attitude while promoting a team-fashioned culture within a research environment
*Demonstrated ability to interact with a diverse variety of constituents, including faculty, staff, and students
*Ability to use and troubleshoot veterinary equipment
*Ability to utilize software including Zoom, MS Teams, MS word, excel, and PowerPoint
*Willing to pursue continuous improvement in the duties described above, including but not limited to additional training and continuing education opportunities as they may arise Preferred
*Completion of residency in laboratory animal medicine. Three or more years of post-doctoral training experience preferred.
*American College of Laboratory Animal Medicine (ACLAM) board certification or eligibility
*Experience with rodent surgical models, rodent technical procedures, USDA species technical procedures and models (i.e. sheep, pig, dog, cat), rodent breeding colonies, genetically altered animals, aquatics procedures, and rodent medicine experience is preferred. This position is on-site.
