Staff Software Engineer (Level 6; cloud expertise)
Overview:
Staff Software Engineer L6 is a senior technical leader who drives innovation by leading the design and implementation of scalable cloud solutions across multiple platforms. In this role, you will oversee the evaluation and adoption of emerging technologies, ensuring infrastructure reliability and cost efficiency to support business objectives. You will drive cross-functional technical initiatives, partnering with architecture engineering leads and business stakeholders to deliver high-impact solutions. Day-to-day, you will mentor engineers to accelerate technical growth and influence technology decisions that improve product scalability and customer satisfaction. Success in this position is measured by your ability to deliver robust cloud architecture, optimize system performance, and contribute to organizational goals through strategic technical direction.
Key Responsibilities:
- Cloud Infrastructure Vision & Strategy: Define and execute the enterprise cloud infrastructure strategy, setting measurable targets such as achieving and maintaining a minimum of 99.9% service uptime and reducing infrastructure costs. Regularly track and report on these metrics to senior leadership, ensuring alignment with organizational objectives.
- Governance & Audit-Readiness: Establish, review, and update cloud governance policies and standards quarterly to ensure audit-readiness, regulatory compliance, and continuous improvement. Lead initiatives to close identified gaps and maintain best-in-class practices for availability, performance, security, maintainability, and cost-efficiency.
- Architecture & Solution Design: Architect and design highly available, scalable, and secure cloud solutions with measurable outcomes, such as achieving zero critical security incidents and meeting performance SLAs for all deployed services. Document and validate all non-functional requirements through regular testing and reporting.
- Cross-Functional Collaboration: Partner with product management, security, and business units to translate business needs into robust cloud solutions, ensuring all stakeholder requirements are met. Facilitate regular alignment sessions to review project progress, address risks, and adjust priorities to maximize business impact.
- Mentorship & Technical Leadership: Provide hands-on mentorship and coaching to engineering teams, setting clear performance goals focused on service reliability, sustainability, and efficiency. Track team progress through metrics such as reduction in incident response times and increased deployment velocity.
- Continuous Improvement: Evaluate and pilot emerging technologies and trends, prioritizing adoption of solutions that demonstrably improve service reliability and efficiency. Report on the impact of these initiatives, such as improved mean time to recovery (MTTR) and reduced cloud spend.
- DevOps & On-Call Support: Advance and standardize CI/CD frameworks. Participate in an on-call rotation to resolve critical incidents within SLA-defined timeframes, with performance measured by incident resolution metrics and post-incident reviews.
- Compliance & Confidentiality: Ensure ongoing compliance with Inovalon’s policies, HIPAA, and all regulatory requirements. Lead regular internal audits and compliance reviews, maintaining a state of audit-readiness and proactively mitigating risks related to data handling and service delivery.
Job Requirements:
- 15 years of experience with hands-on expertise in serverless architecture and cloud warehousing solutions.
- Expert knowledge of leading cloud computing platforms such as AWS, Azure, and Google Cloud Platform (GCP). GCP and Azure preferred.
- Demonstrated experience with managed services, Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS), microservices, and event-driven architectures.
- Proficient in using Terraform for infrastructure automation and management.
- Experience implementing and managing scalable, cloud-based data warehousing solutions, such as Snowflake.
- Systems engineering experience, including configuration and administration of both Windows and Linux server environments.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills, with the ability to convey complex technical concepts to various audiences.
- Strong time management and problem-solving abilities; adaptable to evolving business priorities and operational demands.
- Extensive knowledge of healthcare industry standards, technologies, and operational best practices.
Education:
- Bachelor’s degree in computer science, computer engineering, mathematics, information technology, MIS, or related technical degree.
Physical Demands and Work Environment:
- Sedentary work (e.g., sitting for extended periods).
- Work is subject to inside environmental conditions.
- Travel requirements: Less than 10% locally, typically for training purposes.
