Communications Coordinator
Communications Coordinator
Location: Philadelphia, PA (Hybrid, occasional travel required)
Compensation: $60,000 annually (Full-time, 40 hours/week)
About Sharing Excess:
Sharing Excess is a Philadelphia-based nonprofit focused on addressing food insecurity by rescuing surplus food and distributing it to those in need. While over 47 million people in the U.S. face food insecurity, nearly 40% of the nation's food supply is going to waste. By partnering with grocery stores, restaurants, wholesalers, and farmers, Sharing Excess has delivered nearly 100 million meals to a network of nonprofits, food banks, and community organizations.
We operate with a dynamic, creative team that is laser-focused on improving access to excess food and making food a basic human right. If you’re passionate about storytelling, design, and helping build a movement for food justice, you’ll thrive at Sharing Excess.
Position Overview:
The Communications Coordinator will lead Sharing Excess’s storytelling and brand communications across multiple channels — including newsletters, email campaigns, social media, press, and graphic design projects. This role blends strategy and creativity to elevate the organization’s public voice, grow awareness, and highlight the impact of our food rescue work.
The ideal candidate has exceptional writing and design skills, experience managing digital content, and a strong grasp of how to communicate nonprofit impact with authenticity and clarity. They will collaborate across teams to ensure Sharing Excess’s message is consistent, compelling, and aligned with our mission.

- Manage Sharing Excess’s social media platforms (Instagram, LinkedIn, Facebook, TikTok, etc.) to drive engagement and grow reach.
- Plan, schedule, and analyze digital campaigns using tools like Canva, Meta Business Suite, or Hootsuite.
- Track and report engagement metrics to continuously refine strategy.
Public Relations:
- Support outreach to local and national media outlets to increase visibility and coverage of Sharing Excess initiatives.
- Draft and distribute press releases, media kits, and event announcements.
- Serve as a communications liaison for partners, sponsors, and community collaborators.
Graphic Design & Branding:
- Design branded materials such as flyers, social graphics, presentation decks, and reports.
- Maintain and evolve Sharing Excess’s brand guidelines and design standards.
- Support internal teams with design and messaging needs for campaigns and events.
Cross-Team Collaboration:
- Work closely with operations and partnerships teams to capture stories from the field.
- Support fundraising and community engagement efforts through storytelling and marketing materials.
- Contribute to a creative, mission-driven communications strategy that advances food equity and community impact.
Qualifications:

- Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Marketing, Journalism, Graphic Design, or a related field — or equivalent experience.

- 2+ years of professional experience in communications, digital marketing, public relations, or related fields.
- Experience managing social media accounts for an organization or brand.
- Graphic design experience (Canva, Adobe Suite, or similar) required.

- Experience with email marketing platforms (Mailchimp, Constant Contact, or similar).
- Detail-oriented, organized, and able to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
- Photography and/or video editing experience is a plus.
