POSITION: HOUSEHOLD ASSISTANT | AFTER-SCHOOL NANNY

  • Schedule: Monday–Friday, approximately 35 hours per week. Start/end times are somewhat flexible, with a typical schedule of approximately 12:00/12:30 pm–7:00/7:30 pm. Open to some flexibility when school is not in session. There is the potential for additional hours if agreed upon between employee and family.

  • Salary: $35 per hour, guaranteed 35 hours, PTO: 10 paid vacation, Paid major holidays. Will consider a health insurance stipend if needed. Annual salary review and annual bonus opportunity.

  • Start Date: SEPT 2026

  • Relocation: No – local candidates only, must reside within a reasonable commuting distance.

ABOUT THE FAMILY

  • Principals: 2, Busy small business owners who both work primarily from home. One principal also has an office nearby in Old City, and both have occasional evening business events. The family also has a home in Longport, NJ where they spend time during the summer. They are looking for a candidate with some flexibility to occasionally assist at this household as needed. Travel expenses to/from will be reimbursed. There is guest space if the candidate stays overnight, with additional pay.

  • Children: 2. The children attend different schools and have transportation to/from school. Both will generally be home by approximately 4:00–4:30 pm. In the summer, both children attend sleepaway camps during July and August.

(B) 9 – Bright, funny, and curious. He has ADHD and does best with adults who are warm, patient, and comfortable providing clear expectations and occasional redirection. He enjoys sports, friends, reading, games, cooking/baking, and a variety of activities, and the family would like someone who can help him have a positive after-school routine without defaulting to screens. Experience with children with ADHD is helpful.

(G) 12 – Creative, bright, and increasingly independent. She enjoys her activities, arts and crafts, friends, and having some downtime after school. She may need occasional reminders to complete homework or other responsibilities. The family is not looking for tutoring or intensive homework supervision, but rather someone who can help her stay on track while giving her age-appropriate independence. Both children will need transportation to after-school activities a few days per week- mostly local and a short drive from the family’s home. There may also be occasional transportation to or from school, or to a friend’s home outside the city, but this would be the exception rather than the norm.

A secure, dedicated underground parking space is provided and travel expenses will be reimbursed.

  • Pets: 1; very friendly, easygoing 12 lb. Havapoo. The candidate would help with feeding and/or a walk 1–2 times during the day. Occasional pet-sitting would be a bonus if the candidate is open to it, but is not required.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

HOUSEHOLD ASSISTANT

The responsibilities below are intended to reflect the general rhythm of the role, not a daily checklist. Priorities will vary from week to week depending on the household’s needs.

Daily / As Needed

  • General household tidying, organization, and reset; a separate cleaning service handles regular and deep cleaning.

  • Help keep commonly used household areas organized and running smoothly, including maintaining basic household supplies and flagging or restocking items as needed.

  • Packing a simple lunch and snack for son (lunch provided at school for daughter)

  • Provide light pet support, such as feeding or a walk

  • Bringing in/sorting mail or packages

Weekly / Ongoing

  • Children’s and Dad’s laundry: wash, fold, and put away; no laundry for Mom.

  • Grocery shopping and maintaining household staples.

  • Routine errands such as dry cleaning, returns, post office trips, etc.

  • Help maintain the shared family calendar and keep track of household and children’s schedules.

  • Water household plants.

  • Simple food prep is helpful; full meal preparation is not required.

Monthly / Occasional

  • Help coordinate routine household maintenance and service appointments as needed (for example, plumber, repair technicians, or contractors).

  • Light closet and clothing organization, including rotating children’s seasonal or outgrown clothing.

  • Occasional packing/unpacking/organization related to children’s travel or sleepaway camp.

  • Occasional help with party or event preparation.

  • Other light household organization projects as time allows.

CHILDCARE

Responsibilities are again intended to reflect the general rhythm of the role. The family is looking for someone who genuinely enjoys spending time with school-aged children and can balance engagement and support while encouraging age-appropriate independence.

Daily / After School

  • Engage and connect with the children as a warm, trusted adult presence.

  • Support age-appropriate independence while helping the children stay on track with their afternoon schedules, homework, and other commitments

  • Encourage reasonable limits around phones, television, and other screen time.

  • Encourage healthy snacks, outdoor time, activities, friends, and other interests.

  • Help reinforce routines and expectations established by the parents.

  • Help children keep their belongings and commonly used spaces reasonably tidy.

  • Pack lunch for younger child only

A Few Times Per Week / Ongoing

  • Drive children to/from sports, activities, appointments, friends’ homes, and playdates as needed; most activities are local and generally a short drive or walking distance from the family’s home.

  • Help coordinate playdates, activities, and social plans.

Occasional

  • Provide transportation to or from school when regular transportation is unavailable.

  • Drive to a friend’s home or activity outside the city when needed; this would be the exception rather than the norm.

  • Ideally, the candidate would be open to staying overnight with the children on occasion when the parents are traveling - likely only a few times per year. This is a plus, not a requirement, and would be discussed in advance and compensated separately.

IDEAL CANDIDATE

The ideal candidate is dependable, self-motivated, and genuinely enjoys working with both children and adults.

  • Has a strong work ethic, takes initiative, and is comfortable working independently without needing to be micromanaged.

  • Enjoys being part of a family environment and can be collaborative and communicative while also taking ownership of their responsibilities.

  • Experience with school-aged children; experience with ADHD is helpful but not required.

  • Is flexible and comfortable with the fact that different days or weeks may have different priorities.

  • Is warm, informal, and “all hands on deck” in approach - willing to jump in where needed and help keep family life moving smoothly.

  • Values a relationship built on mutual trust, respect, and partnership. The family sees this person as an extension of the household, particularly when it comes to the children, and in turn wants to provide autonomy, fairness, and a supportive working relationship.

  • Flexibility when school is not in session and for occasional evening or overnight needs, with additional compensation.

REQUIREMENTS

  • Multiple years of relevant professional experience in a household assistant, family assistant, nanny/family assistant, or similar role; long-term experience with a family is strongly preferred.

  • Excellent references and a demonstrated ability to work independently, communicate effectively, take initiative, and follow through reliably.

  • Comfortable working in an informal, partnership-oriented household environment and adapting as priorities shift.

  • Valid driver’s license, clean driving record, and reliable personal vehicle for errands and occasional transportation of the children.

  • Legally authorized to work in the United States.
