Pipe Crew Laborer - Site Development

Joy and Grace LLC
Pittsburgh, PA

Job Description

Job Description

Our client is a site development contractor serving Western Pennsylvania with earthwork, grading, underground utilities, drainage, concrete preparation, and related construction services. We're committed to delivering projects safely, efficiently, and with a high standard of workmanship. As we continue to grow our field operations, we're seeking a dependable Pipe Crew Laborer to support underground utility crews and help drive production in the field.

What you'll do:

The Pipe Crew Laborer will support daily field operations for underground utility installation on site development projects from trench preparation through pipe installation, backfill, cleanup, and project completion. You'll work closely with the foreman, pipelayers, operators, and other crew members to help maintain safe, organized, and productive job sites. This role requires a strong work ethic, attention to safety, and the ability to perform physically demanding work around trenches, utilities, and heavy equipment.

What you'll bring:

Field Operations & Execution

  • Assist with underground utility installation activities, including storm, sanitary, water, and drainage systems on site development projects.
  • Help prepare trenches, stage materials, unload pipe and fittings, hand dig where needed, and support pipelayers and operators during installation.
  • Use hand tools and power tools safely, including shovels, rakes, tampers, saws, compactors, and measuring tools.
  • Assist with bedding, backfill, compaction, cleanup, traffic control setup, and maintaining access around active work zones.
  • Help place and adjust pipe, structures, valves, hydrants, and related materials under the direction of the foreman or lead crew members.
  • Maintain awareness of trench depths, spoil placement, utility markings, and crew movements while working around excavation equipment.

Safety, Quality & Compliance

  • Follow OSHA requirements, trench safety practices, company safety policies, site-specific safety plans, and supervisor instructions at all times.
  • Safely work in and around trenches, excavations, materials, and moving equipment while maintaining situational awareness.
  • Help maintain a clean, organized, and production-ready job site by removing debris, organizing tools, and identifying hazards early.
  • Assist with setup and teardown of trench support, traffic control devices, and work zone protection measures as directed.

Production & Job Cost Awareness

  • Work efficiently to support daily production goals without sacrificing safety, quality, or teamwork.
  • Accurately record hours worked and job phase or cost code information to support field reporting and job costing.
  • Communicate material needs, unsafe conditions, and job site concerns to the foreman promptly.

Team Collaboration

  • Work alongside pipe crew foremen, pipelayers, operators, laborers, and truck drivers to support overall project success.
  • Maintain a professional, team-oriented attitude on job sites and contribute to a safety-first culture.

What's required:

  • Education: High school diploma or equivalent preferred. Relevant construction or utility field experience accepted.
  • Experience: 1+ years of construction, underground utility, pipe crew, or site work experience preferred. Entry-level candidates with strong work ethic and willingness to learn may be considered
  • Technical Skills:
  • Ability to safely use hand tools and basic power tools commonly used in underground utility work.
  • Ability to follow instructions, work around trenches and excavation equipment, and support pipe installation activities.
  • Basic understanding of site safety, material handling, and physical construction labor expectations.
  • Valid driver's license preferred; reliable transportation required.
  • OSHA 10 Construction preferred.
  • CPR/First Aid certification preferred.
  • Travel: Ability to report to job sites throughout Western Pennsylvania; occasional early starts, overtime, or varying site locations may be required.
  • Physical Requirements: Ability to stand, walk, bend, kneel, lift, push, pull, and carry materials and tools; work outdoors in varying weather; and safely perform physically demanding labor for extended periods.

What's preferred:

  • Experience working on underground utility crews.
  • Familiarity with storm, sanitary, water, and drainage pipe installation support.
  • Experience working in and around trenches, compactors, and excavation equipment.
  • Ability to assist with traffic control, material staging, and job site cleanup efficiently.

What We Offer

  • Competitive Compensation: Hourly pay based on experience, work ethic, and production capability.
  • Equipment & Tools: Company-provided equipment and support to perform the job safely and effectively.
  • Benefits: Benefits package offered based on company policy and employment status.
  • Retirement: Retirement plan participation based on company policy and eligibility.
  • PTO: Paid time off and holidays based on company policy.
  • Professional Development: Opportunities to build utility installation skills and grow within Aarcon's field operations team.
  • Culture: Safety-focused, team-oriented work environment with a strong emphasis on production, accountability, and quality workmanship.

What's next:

Submit your resume or work history and include details about any underground utility, trenching, or construction labor experience you have. Candidates with a strong work ethic, dependable attendance, and a safety-first mindset will be contacted to discuss current opportunities.
