Reporting to the Chief Advancement Officer, the Director of Development will serve as a key
leader for the Advancement Office overseeing the day-to-day management of fundraising
initiatives including annual fund, major gifts, and planned giving. Building upon the success of
the current Advancement program, the Director will cultivate and solicit a portfolio of prospects
to secure significant outright and deferred major gifts. The DOD will supervise the Director of
Annual Giving, Major Gift Officer(s) and the Director of Advancement Operations.

Essential Job Functions

  • In collaboration with the Chief Advancement Officer, develop fundraising goals to support
    Baldwin's strategic plan, short- and long-term financial goals and departmental operating
    goals;
  • Develop and manage a comprehensive plan for major gift prospect management aligned
    with institutional funding priorities; Assign and oversee prospect research, identification, and
    qualification for frontline fundraisers;
  • Create annual visit, solicitation and revenue goals for all frontline fundraisers, accurately
    project revenue and track progress towards goals, and produce internal and external reports
    regarding projected and achieved goals;
  • Design detailed prospect relationship strategies around donor interests and school priorities,
    cultivate and solicit an assigned portfolio of approximately 50-60 current and prospective
    donors with the capacity to make gifts of $250K+;
  • Research, cultivate, and solicit new participants for Pennsylvania's EITC/OSTC tax credit
    scholarship program; steward existing participants;
  • Working with the Director of Annual Giving, oversee a successful annual giving program,
    including marketing plans, appeals, and campaigns that utilize a variety of communication
    channels (e.g. web, direct mail, email, social media) to reach all key constituent groups and
    meet budgeted targets;
  • Design and implement a robust planned giving program, including events, website and the
    creation and distribution of related marketing material, both digital and print. Oversee the
    Elizabeth Forrest Johnson Society and the documentation of all planned gifts.
  • Assist in planning and implementing donor-focused special events, including Alumnae
    Weekend/Reunion Giving Program, parent programs and other major gift/donor recognition
    events as needed;
  • Working with the Director of Advancement Operations, ensure the integrity of information in
    the school's Raiser's Edge database relevant to assigned prospects, including visit reports,
    stages, strategies and tasks;
  • Develop a thorough knowledge of Baldwin School history, academic and extracurricular
    programs, and its faculty, students and administration; maintain a thorough understanding of
    the School's current priorities and initiatives;
  • Other duties as assigned by the Chief Advancement Officer.

Professional Skills and Competencies
While Baldwin School will consider a broad range of backgrounds, the ideal candidate will have
the following qualifications/experience.

  • A minimum of 8 years of progressively responsible fundraising and management experience
    in advancement, including experience with the following: individual giving, institutional
    giving, major gifts, annual fund, planned giving, stewardship, development operations, and
    leadership in a major fundraising campaign (planning, implementation, and successful
    conclusion) preferred.
  • Ability to recruit, manage, evaluate, and motivate a diverse team of development
    professionals, through established goals and performance standards, and a commitment to
    the professional development and growth of staff members.
  • Personal success cultivating, soliciting, and stewarding major individual donors at the five-,
    six- and seven-figure levels; demonstrated ability to inspire discerning, high-net-worth
    individuals to philanthropic leadership.
  • The professional credibility, intellectual depth and maturity to garner the trust and confidence
    of the Head of School, senior leaders, faculty, trustees, students, and other key constituents.
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills with proven ability to engage
    prospective donors in-person and in writing through articulate, compelling, and well-
    reasoned funding proposals.
  • Emotionally intelligent leader, with the interpersonal skills to develop and sustain impactful
    relationships at all levels and with an array of diverse constituencies. A sense of humor and
    perspective, and a penchant for transparency, consultation, and collaboration.
  • Self-starting strategic thinker whose hallmark qualities include being positive, persistent,
    personable and possessing a desire to succeed.
  • The ability to work in a fast-paced, goal-oriented environment and relate to a variety of
    people of all ages and backgrounds.
  • A personal commitment to excellence, integrity and the mission of Baldwin.
  • The ability to extract and analyze data to make effective, efficient decisions about donor
    strategy and process. Working knowledge of modern data management practices and
    innovations that can streamline advancement processes and contribute to the integration of
    related functions.
  • Knowledge of relational donor database software (RaisersEdge NXT).
  • Evening and weekend work required.
  • Ability to travel locally, regionally, and nationally, with possible international travel
    opportunities.
  • Bachelor's degree required, advanced degree preferred.
