POSITION OVERVIEW

The Medical Care Lead Technician is responsible to oversee the Admissions and Adoptions Health Department as well as coordinate movement of animal throughout the center. This position plays an important leadership role in ensuring that staff follow established guidelines regarding animal care and reducing LOS to ensure excellent animal care for the pets coming to the center and the people caring for them. All job duties are supportive of Providence Animal Center’s mission in accordance with the organization’s policies and procedures, and with the safety of people and animals at the forefront of all activities. This job description should be taken as a general description of the responsibilities of the position.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Department Management:

· Oversee the Admissions and Adoption Health Departments. Function as an associate as needed.

· Support the development and management of the Parvo Clinic.

· Assist in establishing and implementing standard operating procedures/protocols (SOP) and training protocols for designated staff members.

· Ensure that examinations for all incoming animals are performed in accordance with the Admissions Exam Protocols.

· Handle animals, perform assessments and treatments, and promptly report health and temperament information to appropriate staff for evaluation.

· Perform “rounds” by veterinary direction, with or without direct supervision, to minimize LOS for animals on hold for follow up vet checks. Provide updates for department managers.

· Ensure vaccines are up to date for all animals in the center. Booster as needed following the Vaccination Protocol.

· Monitor health status of pets housed in the Admissions and Adoption Health Departments.

· Collaborate with department leads to formulate lists for spay/neuter, admissions exams, follow-up vet exams, and foster care placement “fast tracking” of animals.

· Answer phone calls and respond to email messages in a timely manner.

· Ensure daily, weekly, and monthly reports are completed and submitted, including monthly LOS reports and grant reports as needed.

· Provide specific information to the Foster Coordinator, such as animal ID numbers, age, and weight of animals in need of foster placement. Perform foster animal exams and vaccinations.

· Communicate with the Lifesaving Coordinator regarding available space in the Admissions & Admission Health Departments, including open areas, kennels, and areas under quarantine. Provide anticipated duration of animals’ quarantine and count of animals awaiting foster placement.

· Ensure that accurate and updated data is entered into the animal database. This includes but is not limited to animal sign-in information, dates of exams, and daily tracking of animals’ locations within assigned areas.

· Coordinate social media photos as needed.

· Ensure safe and clean areas.

Staff Management:

· Ensure that proper policies and procedures are communicated and followed.

· Ensure proper animal care and cleanliness of assigned areas.

· Assist with the hiring process.

· Oversee the training of new associates with assistance from team leads/seasoned staff.

· Supervise, mentor, and coach associates.

· Promote positive recognition of good performance.

· Actively engaged in teambuilding.

· Develop managerial skills.

QUALIFICATIONS

· High School Degree or equivalent.

· 3+ years of medical care experience in a shelter setting.

· Must have supervisory knowledge including training methods, motivation techniques and decision-making competence.

· Skill in mediating disputes, conflicts and grievances.

· Ability to train and effectively direct the activities of staff.

· Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

· Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with volunteers, co-workers, and staff.

· Act proactively to ensure smooth team operations.

· Knowledge of computers and relevant software applications including MS Office.

· Must be:

o Comfortable working in a fast-paced, high-energy environment.

o Able to prioritize effectively and manage workday hours efficiently.

o Experienced with handling animals, knowledgeable about animal behavior issues, and have a general understanding of animal health concerns.

o Genuinely interested in the work, programs, and mission of Providence Animal Center.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT

· Ability to lift and carry 20lbs without assistance.

· Flexibility with bending and reaching in tight spaces to perform assigned duties.

· Must sit, stand, walk, bend, and stoop frequently to perform duties.

· Work is performed in an animal shelter, office setting, and outdoor environment in a variety of weather conditions.

· Possible exposure to cleaning agents, allergens, zoonotic disease, and loud/frequent noise.
