Salary: $40,000 - $50,000

Position Summary:
Under general direction, the Assistant Scientist performs a high level of independent research within the Department of Pathology. This role primarily involves developing and executing projects in the field of lupus autoimmunity neuroscience, substance-abuse–related pathology, and microbial/host interactions with the potential to effectively collaborate with colleagues within the department.

Required Education and Experience:
  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field and at least two years of related research experience.
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
Required Skills and Abilities:
  • Experience working with small animals, primarily in handling, behavior studies, injecting, perfusing, and tissue/organ collection.
  • Experience with animal studies.
  • Experience in tissue sectioning and staining for microscopy.
  • Ability to assist with bacterial culture and standard microbiology tasks.
  • Accurate and timely record keeping and organizational skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills.
  • Ability to effectively interact with diverse groups of students, faculty, and staff.
  • Ability to operate all standard laboratory and office equipment and software, including MS Office.
  • Knowledge of general principles in cell/molecular biology.
  • Experience in standard cell/molecular biology techniques, such as Western blotting and PCR.
Essential Duties:
  • Research Development and Execution: Assist in developing and executing research projects in lupus autoimmunity/neuropsychiatric lupus, substance-abuse–related pathology, and microbial/host interactions.
  • Animal Handling and Behavioral Studies: Practical experience working with small animal models (mice) is required. Responsibilities include handling, behavior studies, injections, perfusion, and tissue/organ collection.
  • Microbiology and Bacterial Culture: Support laboratory work involving basic bacterial culture, sample preparation, and experimental setups.
  • Laboratory Techniques: Experience with common molecular, biochemical, and cellular methods such as cell culture, western blotting, ELISA, and PCR is advantageous.
  • Advanced Technical Skills: Previous technical experience in flow cytometry, immunohistochemistry, and immunological assays is highly desirable.
  • Data Management and Analysis: Manage and analyze data generated from experiments performed.
  • Collaborative Research: Facilitate collaborative research efforts with other laboratories.
  • Training and Mentorship: Train laboratory personnel, including students, research methods, procedures, and equipment.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
