Mechanical Maintenance Specialist — Steel Production
A day in this role
Your shift kicks off with PPE on—hard hat, safety glasses, hearing protection, protective clothing, and metatarsal boots—because safety is the constant. You’ll review work orders, coordinate with operators, and put hands on the tools: standard hand tools, specialized diagnostic equipment, and mobile gear such as pendant and overhead cranes and forklifts. From there, you might chase down a hydraulic leak, realign a conveyor, swap a gearbox in a power transmission train, or service a lubrication system to keep the mill running without interruption.
What you’ll tackle
- Install, maintain, troubleshoot, and repair mechanical equipment and systems across the plant—hydraulic, pneumatic, lubrication, power transmission, conveyors, cranes, and mobile equipment.
- Jump in to support operating functions when required to sustain continuous operations.
- Work solo with minimal supervision or side-by-side with other maintenance technicians depending on the job.
- Access jobs at height and, at times, within confined spaces using proper procedures.
- Operate within varied mill conditions—hot, cold, dirty, greasy, wet, and noisy—as you move between plant areas.
What you bring
- At least 1 year of manufacturing or industrial experience (military experience counts) or equivalent education. Relevant background may include hydraulics, pneumatics, lubrication, power transmission, welding, pipefitting, structural repair, or diesel mechanic work.
- High school diploma or GED.
- Ability to work 8-hour rotating shifts—including Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays—and to take overtime as needed.
- Uncompromising commitment to safety practices and guidelines; consistent use of required PPE.
- Punctual, reliable, and self-directed; able to prioritize and finish tasks.
- Successful completion of required assessment test(s).
Technical proficiencies
- Mechanical Troubleshooting Skills
- Mechanical Testing
- Mechanical Assembly Skills
- Machine Safety Inspections
