Department Details:

UPMC Magee-Womens Hospital is the region’s premier provider of obstetric and neonatal care with more than 10,000 births occurring each year. The hospital also serves as the regional referral center for high-risk maternal care and fetal therapy, providing physicians and hospitals with access to the highest level of resources. Specialists in neonatology, pediatrics, surgery, genetics, ultrasound, and maternal-fetal medicine work together in multidisciplinary teams to provide the best possible care for each patient.

The Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), at Magee-Womens treats more than 1,700 critically ill newborns annually. An attending neonatologist is present in the NICU, at all times, in order to supervise patient care. The NICU is equipped with a total of 83 beds, including 48 private rooms and three open-bay pods (located within the NICU, on the 2700 unit, and on the 2800 unit). With private bays that utilize solid walls instead of glass or curtains. The privacy of these walls enhances Magee’s family centered care philosophy and allows for increased family interaction with baby, nurses, and support staff. With its own triage area, the NICU is able to stabilize newly admitted patients before being transferred into a private room.

About Our Team:

This Level III unit is staffed by highly trained neonatal specialists. This team includes neonatologists, neonatal nurse practitioners, physician assistants, registered nurses, nutritionists, developmental specialists, pharmacists, physical therapists, occupational therapists, a neonatal transportation team, and designated neonatal respiratory therapists. The organizational collaborative efforts of Magee and UPMC Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh allow Magee’s patients to be supported by UPMC Children’s medical team. This partnership enables patients requiring surgical intervention or extensive consultation to be transported to Children’s for further management. As a regional referral center for high-risk maternal and fetal care, Magee provides physicians and hospitals across the tri-state area with access to the highest level of resources, resulting in the best possible care for patients.

The UPMC Pediatric Advanced Practice Provider (APP) Fellowship Program is dedicated to advancing UPMC as the premier educational setting for producing excellence in patient care delivery through an innovative and world-class clinical curriculum specifically tailored to prepare the physician assistant and nurse practitioner to practice in an evolving and increasingly complex health care market.

The UPMC Pediatric APP Fellowship Program cultivates a mastery of pediatric fundamentals including acute care, ambulatory care, procedure performance, and principles of pediatric subspecialty medicine. The Pediatric APP Fellows are employed, paid learners with the goal to provide the manual skill, fundamental knowledge, and critical thinking skills needed to make sound clinical judgments on a daily basis. Pediatric APP Fellows are being trained to provide autonomous comprehensive pediatric care, within the scope of their license and in collaboration with their supervising physician.

The first one year of employment will consist of the UPMC Pediatric Neonatology APP Fellowship Program . Candidates with greater than or equal to 3 (three) years’ experience within Neonatology will have the option of foregoing the Fellowship Program but are encouraged to enroll for the most comprehensive onboarding experience possible.

The Neonatal Advanced Practice Provider (APP) is responsible for providing inpatient care services in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). This includes evaluation and management of neonatal patients and performing procedures as needed. The Neonatal APP-Staff is expected to follow established standards and practices when performing these duties. The Neonatal APP is responsible to set the standards for the level and quality of care. The Neonatal APP has responsibility and accountability for the provision of care through supervision by and collaboration with a physician. The Neonatal APP manages and provides patient care activities for a group of patients and their families through the application of independent judgment, communication, and collaboration with all team members. The role of the Neonatal APP encompasses leadership, partnership, collaboration, and supervision.
