Starting salary: $52,200 plus benefits

Work Location: Capitol Building, Harrisburg, PA

Work hours:

EVENING SHIFT 2:00PM to 10:00PM

NIGHT SHIFT 10:00PM to 6:00AM

ALL SHIFTS ROTATE WEEKEND/HOLIDAY COVERAGE AS ASSIGNED

The Sergeant-at-Arms is an institutional position under the jurisdiction of the Secretary of the Senate and is responsible for providing security to all areas of the Senate. Deputies are sexpected to act in a nonpartisan and confidential manner when handling their job responsibilities. All shifts are required to be in attendance to support session, including late nights, or until the Senate recesses.

SUMMARY OF POSITION:

The Senate Sergeant-at-Arms maintains a security presence in the Capitol Complex on a 24/7 basis, 365 days a year. Duties include but are not limited to: protection of Members, staff, and visitors in conjunction with Capitol Police, access control, manning assigned posts, patrols and inspections, escorts, search of persons and packages for weapons, emergency notification and response, knowledge of the Standard Operating Procedures, General Orders, and directives issued by the Chief Sergeant-at-Arms and/or the Parliamentarian/Secretary of the Senate, other assignments as directed.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

· Assist in ensuring the safety of the Senate.

· Follow all General Orders of the Department, including safe handling of firearms.

· Patrol areas of the Capitol to protect people and property, maintain decorum.

· Stay alert, conscientious and efficient in the performance of assigned duties.

· Always exhibit professional and polite demeanor.

· Maintain composure while directing employees, visitors, protestors, large groups, to comply with emergency procedures in a unique political setting.

· Utilize Incident Command training to take charge of safety related incidents until relieved of command by a higher authority.

· Assist guests and visitors when possible or direct them to the appropriate office.

· Attend and pass all required trainings, including but not limited to Act 235, MPOETC, Practical Threat Response, Tactical Medicine, Stop the Bleed, CPR/AED/First Aid.

· Must be willing to carry a firearm, attend all requiredfirearms training and annual MPOETC Qualification.

· Deputy Sergeant-at-Arms must wear provided uniforms and approved equipment.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

· Current PA Act 235 Lethal Weapons Training certification

· Current Pennsylvania License to Carry a Firearm

· 2 years or more of consistent experience in law enforcement or security field

· Pass a pre-employment screening process, including background check

· Be at least 21 years of age

· High School diploma or GED required

· Proof of eligibility to work in the United States

· Ability to read, write and speak the English language

· Ability to sit, stand, and walk without assistance

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

· Prior experience in the military, law enforcement, or armed security setting

· Bachelor’s degree or combination of education & experience

· Candidates with prior military service may be required to produce form DD-214

· Write detailed reports and logs

· Ability to communicate by radio, phone, and in-person
