Ophthalmic Technician- UPMC Vision Institute-Oakland
The UPMC Vision Institute is seeking a detail‑oriented, patient‑focused Ophthalmic Technician to support our busy academic ophthalmology practice located in Oakland. In this role, you will work alongside our ophthalmologists, residents, and clinical team to help deliver world‑class eye care to patients of all ages.
This full‑time position offers Monday–Friday daylight hours, with shift times ranging between 7:00 AM and 5:00 PM depending on clinic needs. No evenings or weekends are required. Travel to additional clinic sites—approximately 20% of the time—including Shadyside, Forbes, Monroeville, Mercy, St. Margaret’s, Wexford, Bethel Park, and Natrona Heights, is part of this role.

Responsibilities:
- History taking to include ocular, medical, medication, social and family.Visual acuity assessment: with and without correction, distance, near and intermediate, pinhole, best corrected, potential acuity, brightness acuityLensometry: automated and manualPupillary assessment: measurement, compare and evaluate.Visual fields: Amsler grid & confrontation fieldsOcular Motility: Knowledge of the functions & anomalies, cover tests, stereo-acuity, nystagmusRefractometry: auto-refractor, transposing scripts from + to -
- Tonometry: ICare, Tonopen and the care and proper disinfection of each.Supplemental skills: Color testing, glare testAngle assessment & dilation of pupils.Contact lenses: insertion, removal, and instructions.Assist with maintaining office inventory, notifying appropriate staff when supplies are needed, restocking exam rooms, cleaning and sterilizing of instruments and cleaning patient exam rooms at end of day.Travel to other clinical sites.
- High school diploma or equivalent is required.
- Experience as an Ophthalmic Technician in an Ophthalmology office or combination of related education and/or experience preferred.
- Completion of AAO Home Study Course is preferred.
- Prior optometric or ophthalmic experience preferred.
Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:
Valid CPR certification - Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)
