Open Rank, Professional Track Faculty, Markets, Innovation, And Design -
R0000002266

The Freeman College of Management at Bucknell University invites applicants for a Professional Track position in the Markets, Innovation, and Design Department beginning in Fall 2026. We are looking for a candidate with either a demonstrated record of excellence in undergraduate teaching, or exceptional promise of teaching to a diverse student body, and an ability to contribute to the College's mission of providing a rigorous, experiential education, in the context of a unique national university with a vibrant liberal arts core and strong complementary professional programs. The initial appointment is for three years, with the possibility of reappointment in subsequent years contingent on satisfactory performance.

The successful candidate will be qualified to teach design-related undergraduate courses, including Design Realization (MIDE 302), a studio-based course in which students gain hands-on practice making their ideas visible to others (i.e. models & prototypes), potentially the introductory Markets, Innovation, and Design course (MIDE 300) that blends design thinking with concepts from marketing and innovation, and additional elective courses related to innovation, design, and creativity. Given the centrality of design thinking in the MIDE curriculum, familiarity with this approach and/or studio-based pedagogy to innovation will be advantageous. Professional experience related to any of the aforementioned domains is highly desirable. Professional track faculty are not eligible for tenure and have a teaching load of six courses per year.

The successful candidate will possess a graduate degree in a relevant field. In addition, candidates will be expected to advise students, facilitate student experiential learning, and maintain faculty qualifications consistent with the AACSB accreditation standards for professional track faculty. The starting rank will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.

Bucknell values professional track colleagues as full members of the faculty and provides extensive resources to support their growth, including a robust Teaching & Learning Center. Professional track faculty are eligible to vote in University and College faculty meetings and serve on faculty committees. Faculty in the Freeman College of Management receive annual funding for professional development and scholarly engagement. These funds can support any appropriate professional development activity, including travel and attendance at conferences and workshops for professional growth. Professional track faculty are reviewed every three years, with the initial review occurring prior to the third year of the appointment. Excellent teaching is the primary criterion for renewal and promotion. This track includes three successive ranks. Faculty become eligible for promotion to the next rank after six years of service at their current rank. Prior equivalent service may be applied toward promotion.

The approximately 800 undergraduate students in the AACSB-accredited Freeman College of Management may choose among five highly interdisciplinary majors that combine courses in the various fields of management, with offerings also in the arts, humanities, natural and social sciences, and engineering. Our innovative curriculum and world-class teacher-scholars earned Freeman College a top-20 ranking in the Poets & Quants' annual survey of undergraduate business programs in each of the past 3 years. We believe that an undergraduate education combining technical skills and deep intellectual exploration is the best preparation for thoughtful and capable leaders. Non-tenure track faculty members must be capable of contributing to this mission through teaching, advising, and service.

Bucknell University, an Equal Opportunity Employer, believes that students learn best in a diverse, inclusive community and is therefore committed to academic excellence through diversity in its faculty, staff, and students. As such, the successful candidate should have a demonstrated ability to work successfully with a diverse student body and a track record of inclusive, innovative pedagogy. We seek candidates who are committed to Bucknell's efforts to create and maintain a climate that fosters the growth and development of a diverse student body, to raising perspectives that may not otherwise be vocalized in the classroom, and who are eager to advise and mentor students from multicultural and underrepresented student groups. We welcome candidates who demonstrate excellence in reflective multicultural and inclusive teaching practices and who display a strong commitment to collaboration and interdisciplinarity.

QUALIFICATIONS

• Candidates must possess a graduate degree in a field appropriate for teaching design-related courses.

• Candidates must have either compiled a record of teaching excellence, or demonstrate potential for teaching excellence.

APPLICATION

Review of applications will begin immediately and will continue until the position is filled. For additional information, and to apply, please visit Bucknell's career site (careers.bucknell.edu). Applications will only be accepted online. We intend to conduct first round interviews remotely. Complete files must include (please submit as a single PDF):

• Cover letter,

• Current curriculum vita,

• Statement of teaching and advising philosophy

• Teaching evaluations that serve as evidence of exceptional teaching, or evidence of the potential for exceptional teaching.

Candidates who progress through the interview process will be asked to provide contact information for three professional references so that confidential letters of reference may be obtained.

Please address any questions about the search to Eric Santanen, Chair of the Search Committee, at mailto:[email protected].
