MAIN PURPOSE:

To lead and develop specialist psychiatry services within Brainkind Hospitals. To operate within a recovery model that helps individuals learn new strategies and coping mechanisms for the lifelong effects of acquired brain injury and related conditions. The service adopts a holistic approach, combining medical, psychological, and social models, within a community rehabilitation framework using a bio-psycho-social approach.

The Consultant psychiatrist will lead during the stabilization phase, managing polypharmacy, unstable presentations, and fragmented social support networks to make them more manageable. They will provide strategic psychiatric input within the neurobehavioral model to patients with acquired brain injury, working as part of a multidisciplinary team.

To serve as a professional role model and support the clinical leadership team in achieving Brainkind objectives.

MAIN TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Lead neuropsychiatry services and act as Responsible Clinician for patients detained under the Mental Health Act, with clinical responsibility for patients admitted to Brainkinds hospital in the York area.
  • Conduct regular psychiatric reviews and collaborate with other disciplines to provide comprehensive care for individuals with acquired brain injuries.
  • Provide expert psychiatric advice regarding service provision and support colleagues within Brainkind hospitals.
  • Lead the clinical team, address performance issues, and liaise with managers to ensure standards are met.
  • Develop positive relationships with key stakeholders, including clinical colleagues and external organizations.
  • Ensure practices are inclusive, respecting diversity and individual circumstances.
  • Deliver high-quality, evidence-based interventions as part of a multidisciplinary team, ensuring safe and effective psychiatric care.
  • Lead weekly clinical team meetings and oversee assessments, multidisciplinary inputs, goal setting, and reviews.
  • Coordinate with internal and external professionals, families, and individuals supported.
  • Manage liaising with other clinical teams, GPs, and specialists regarding physical health issues.
  • Oversee pre-admission assessments for out-of-area patients when necessary.
  • Participate in a non-residential on-call rota, including York Hospital, based on partner agency arrangements.
  • Provide clinical consultancy and guidance to other psychiatrists working within the hospital.
  • Hold Section 12 approval under the Mental Health Act 1983 (2007).

ABOUT YOU:

  • MB BS or equivalent medical qualification.
  • Full GMC registration with a license to practice.
  • Good standing with the GMC, with no warnings or conditions affecting practice.
  • Higher qualification in medical education, research, or management (e.g., MRCPsych).
  • Approved clinician status and S12 approval.
  • Excellent clinical skills with a bio-psycho-social perspective and broad medical knowledge.
  • Decision-making based on evidence and collaborative input.
  • Ability to meet duties under MHA and MCA.
  • Experience in clinical audit and quality improvement initiatives.
  • Commitment to shared leadership and collaborative working to improve services.
