Church Sexton (Building Maintenance & Custodial Team Member)

Job description: The Unitarian Society of Germantown is seeking a part-time Church Sexton to help maintain the cleanliness, organization, and maintenance necessary for our historic and beautiful church building, adjacent nursery school building, and grounds. Candidates should be self motivated, have an eye for detail, and have good people and organizational skills.

Responsibilities include:

Custodial & housekeeping - Church Sexton is responsible for the general custodial care of all on-site facilities. This person will have an eye towards keeping the interior and exterior of the building aesthetically-pleasing and free of clutter. Routine tasks include but are not limited to: sweeping, mopping and vacuuming throughout the building, ensuring that kitchen and bathrooms are clean and stocked with proper supplies at all times, emptying trash and recycling receptacles regularly, and maintaining inventory of of cleaning, housekeeping and hospitality supplies.

Staffing of Events - With guidance from Congregational Administrator and Rental Coordinator, the Church Sexton will support a busy calendar of on-site events by event fulfilling set-up/break-down needs and providing on site presence and assistance to building renters for parties, concerts, and other events as scheduled. This person will staff Sunday Service each week, including setting up, providing support for the duration of Service, and cleaning up.

Building maintenance - Church Sexton will perform regular inspections of the facility and evaluate for repair issues, reporting to staff regularly on condition of building and grounds, coordinating larger repair projects with staff, Building and Grounds Committee, and outside contractors. This person will perform light handyperson work such as changing lightbulbs, hanging pictures, small paint jobs, etc.

Grounds - maintaining the grounds as seasonally appropriate including trash, leaf and snow removal.

Pay & Schedule: This position is hourly at $20/hour, estimated at 15-20 hours per week, with Sundays required. In collaboration with their supervisor, the right candidate for this role will have the opportunity to determine their own working schedule with the understanding that this position does require reliable evening and weekend availability to staff events. Occasional on-call availability may be required for urgent building needs. Applicants should have a valid driver’s license and reliable transportation to and from Germantown.
