The Philly Black Worker Project (BWP) is a Black-run organizing vehicle with the mission to:

  • Lead and engage in campaigns that empower Black workers to advance our rights and improve job quality in key employment sectors.

The Role: Organizing Director (or Manager)
We are seeking an extremely bright, dedicated individual with a passion for racial and economic justice and building a movement of Black working-class leaders. The ideal candidate has led teams and has strong roots in the community, is a strategic thinker, strong basebuilder & understands the need for short term and long term goals and victories. This role will possess an ability to bring solutions-oriented approaches to dealing with conflicts, is a strong team player, and is committed to their own and the team’s development and growth.

Please Note: We will hire for this role, based on experience and performance during the hiring process.

We are a budding organization, looking for creative, enthusiastic and dedicated organizers to join our team.

Requirements

  • Deep commitment to racial, social, and economic justice and a willingness to work collaboratively with persons of diverse racial and ethnic backgrounds, socioeconomic status, ages, genders and sexual orientations
  • Minimum of seven to ten years of labor organizing or base building experience
  • Minimum of three to five years leading a team of three or more
  • Systems oriented, able to think about how to develop and strengthen teams
  • Strong written, verbal and listening skills
  • Track record of being able to work under pressure
  • Willingness to travel and work long, flexible hours
  • Self-motivated while working independently or with a team
  • Basic computer skills (word processing, spreadsheet & database, electronic communication, social media tools such as Twitter and facebook)
  • A car and a valid driver’s license are required.

  • Commitment to Black Worker Justice: Deep passion for racial, social, and economic justice, grounded in lived experience, intersectionality, and a commitment to organizing Black working-class communities.
  • Adaptability & Continuous Learning: Creative, solutions-oriented, and committed to continuous growth through feedback, reflection, and developing new organizing skills.

Responsibilities

Supervisor of Staff

  • Supervises organizers, maintaining regular supervision and check-ins that create a learning environment supporting staff and interns in doing their best work.
  • Leads a team of staff organizers and volunteers through an organizing campaign.
  • Able to clearly communicate organizing choices
  • Serves as a team leader whose primary responsibility is to model, coach and train organizing staff on best practices for organizing.
  • Monitors team effectiveness and evaluates progress against the campaign plan and goals.

Organizational Development

  • Supports development and operations staff through grant application process, as it relates to organizing and campaigns
  • Represents the organization externally at coalition meetings and other external events
  • Able to convene partners, based a clear power and landscape assessment

Basebuilding and Membership Development

  • Designs and oversees systems for member recruitment, retention, and leadership development
  • Sets expectations, metrics, and accountability for organizers’ basebuilding work
  • Ensures consistent use of one-on-ones, leadership ladders, and committee structures
  • Monitors quality of organizing (not just quantity) and intervenes to improve practice through regular shadowing, observation and debriefing
  • Coaches organizers to build strong, worker and community-led formations
  • Develops organizing skill building training and curriculum for members and staff- to develop their organizing skill set.

Organizing Strategy Development

  • Able to develop a command of all elements of the Philly Black Worker Project Organizing Model with the capacity to refine, model and coach on all facets of the Organizing Model.
  • Research potential organizing targets. Analyze data and apply other criteria to assess possible targets of organizing. Conduct and may lead the investigation of organizing targets to gather data and information, build a list of workers, assesses worker interest, and scouts out hot workplaces
  • Writes organizing plans and ensures that the written plans of team members are appropriate and aligned. Planning includes resource and staff needs as well as operational activities.
  • Develops and leads organizing drives and blitz at key moments in campaigns
  • Develops and implements strategies to counter oppositional campaigns and narratives.
  • Creates a system to keep the Director informed on all organizing activities, developments and progress of assigned campaigns.
  • Develops agitational messaging and communications that can shape organizing materials, like leaflets, one pagers, scripts, etc.
  • Operates computer database programs and checks for the maintenance of organizing database by team (Asana, Every Action, Google Suite)

Performs related work as required.

Compensation and Benefits

  • Compensation and Benefits- You will be paid on the 15th and last day of the month via GUSTO.
  • Employees receive health, dental, and life insurance after the completion of 30 days of continuous employment.
  • Personal Leave (8 days per calendar year), Vacation (15 days during the first year of employment), Sick Leave (4 weeks)
  • All Federal Holidays Off (with organizational breaks - one week in July and again in Mid December through the New Year)
  • Other Benefits- A 401 K Retirement Plan, up to $2,000 annually for professional development activities, a wellness budget and $50 per pay check cell phone reimbursement.
  • Please Note: relocation expenses will be available, based on current location.

Application Process
Our application process will close on August 31st, 2026 .

Stage 1: Initial Application

  • Hiring team will complete phone screenings with top candidates

Stage 2: Interview

  • The interview will take place for 60 minutes with the Executive Director and Team Members.

Stage 3: Scenario Interview

  • If you make it to this stage, you will be asked to prepare for a 90-minute final interview that will assess your performance in tasks that will be required of you in the full-time role. This interview will include an advisory board member and executive director.

Stage 4: Staff Meet and Great

  • If you make it to this stage, you will be asked to join non management staff for a 45-minute meet and greet, with light questions and time to ask questions of them.

Final Stage: Reference Checks

  • The application process will require three professional references, including at least one person you’ve reported to directly and one person you’ve supervised. If you are selected to move to the next stage, we will notify you and reach out to your references.
  • Reference checks will be 20-minute calls.

Working Conditions
This position will be required to work long and irregular hours including work on weekends and on holidays as necessary. The work of an organizer necessitates flexibility as demands and priorities for a particular campaign or the overall organization shift. It is expected that organizers be available during the times that workers in their assigned area are available at their work site, home, or other locale. You may be required to travel.
