Position: Second Grade Teacher, Long-Term Substitute

Full Time, Salaried: The position includes 5 full days per week in the classroom, as well as recess duties, faculty meetings and additional time outside of this schedule for parent teacher conferences and school events. The position includes benefits.

Long-Term Substitute Term : The position will begin on December 8, 2025, and run through the remainder of the 2025-2026 school year.

Position Description: Plymouth Meeting Friends School is seeking an experienced teacher as a long-term substitute (leave replacement) for our Second Grade class. The Second Grade teacher works directly with students in all core academic subject areas to deliver a highly interactive, integrated program. Responsibilities include planning and implementing an active, integrated curriculum, and collaborating with PMFS colleagues in a creative, dynamic, values-based learning community.

Second Grade at Plymouth Meeting Friends School offers a rich social and academic atmosphere carefully planned to provide exploration, discovery and skill development. Students learn through direct instruction, as well as through open-ended activities that nurture their sense of wonder and develop their critical thinking skills. The successful candidate will have experience with:

  • Establishing a positive classroom community and culture of belonging
  • Utilizing social-emotional community-building strategies and techniques
  • Implementing strong classroom management skills
  • Differentiating instruction for a broad range of learning styles and abilities
  • Utilizing collaborative and community-building approaches to learning
  • Supporting young children in using tools for effective communication and conflict resolution.

Essential competencies include familiarity with current research, trends, and best practices in progressive education; experience with using workshop and inquiry approaches to learning; solid commitment to diversity, equity, justice and anti-racist education, and experience supporting diverse learning styles.

Qualifications: The successful candidate has a minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in elementary education and at least 3 years of elementary classroom experience. A strong alignment with Quaker testimonies and progressive education—in philosophy and teaching practice–is expected.
