Tooling Design & Build Machinist (Die Repair)

Are You Wired for Precision?

Can you read a blueprint and immediately visualize the finished die or fixture? Do you enjoy planning a build sequence, selecting machines, and verifying every last thousandth? If so, this role puts your end-to-end tooling skills to work—design interpretation, layout, machining, assembly, and verification.

Mission

Fabricate and repair metalworking dies, cutting tools, jigs and fixtures, gauges, and machinists’ hand tools by applying expertise in tool/die design, shop math, metal properties, and machining and assembly procedures.

Your Focus Areas

  • Plan & visualize: Analyze specifications from blueprints, sketches, models, or descriptions; determine materials, tooling, and machines.
  • Engineer the process: Compute dimensions; plan layouts; establish assembly methods and operation sequences.
  • Prepare stock: Measure, mark, and scribe metal before machining.
  • Machine with accuracy: Set up and run lathes, milling machines, and grinders; validate parts against specifications.
  • Fixture like a pro: Lift parts manually or with a hoist; secure using vises, V-blocks, and angle plates.
  • Verify rigorously: Check dimensions, alignments, and clearances with dial indicators, gauge blocks, thickness gauges, and micrometers.
  • Enhance performance: Heat-treat tools or parts as required.
  • Integrate systems: When applicable, connect wiring and hydraulic lines to install electrical/hydraulic components.
  • Improve designs: Review existing dies/tools/fixtures and recommend construction/function modifications.
  • Create from concept: Turn general descriptions into specifications for specialty tools; sketch or draw product designs.
  • Collaborate: Coordinate tasks and instructions with supervisors and coworkers.
  • Inspect & maintain: Inspect and measure parts; calibrate and maintain personal tools.
  • Nice to have: Experience with CNC machines.
  • And as needed: Other related duties as assigned.
