Position Summary:

The Senior Academic Advisor in the Center for Performing and Cinematic Arts (CPCA) provides leadership for various advising staff functions, including supervising Student Peer Advisors, taking a lead in training advisors, and assisting in evaluation of ongoing training needs. The Senior Academic Advisor serves as a mentor to advisors and other academic support positions to help ensure students receive effective advising services. Helps initiate and implement cross-functional student service initiative (i.e., supporting the integration of career/professional development with academic advising).

The Senior Academic Advisor engages in a variety of activities designed to achieve, maintain, and improve student success and retention, and provides students with access to the information and resources necessary for the attainment of academic, professional, and personal goals. Assists with the development and implementation of academic advising initiatives and procedures aimed at student success and retention. Assesses efficacy of online and in person initiatives and tracks data related to advising services and student success. Acts as an advocate and referral source and provides consistent outreach and follow-up services. The Senior Academic Advisor presents at orientations, group advising sessions, and workshops as assigned. Meets regularly with students across the Center's curricula individually to assist with academic planning, registration, degree completion, etc. Works to support the goal of increasing four-year graduation rates. Develops and manages CPCA orientation programming, using assessment to improve outreach and efficacy. Senior Academic Advisor must understand student development theories and will respond to changing trends in the first year and transfer student population. Conducts routine academic audits and maintains accurate documentation. Works collegially with faculty, staff, and students to disseminate information regarding curricular requirements, academic policy, and other related information. Represents the advising unit at assigned college meetings/events and represents the unit and the Center at assigned university meetings and events; supports the Center's mission.

This position is assigned a hybrid work arrangement (on-campus and remote), the duration of this hybrid work arrangement is at the discretion of Temple University and the Department.

Required Education & Experience:

Master's degree and three (3) or more year's relevant experience. At least two (2) years academic advising experience in a higher education academic setting. Demonstrated leadership/project management and/or training design experience.

Preferred:
  • Experience working or studying in the performing and cinematic arts
  • Experience in higher education or related field
  • Experience with Banner
  • Knowledge of Temple University academic resources, policies, and curricula
An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.

  • Demonstrated experience with retention programming and services.

  • Demonstrated interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills; ability to communicate effectively with students in group settings.

  • Demonstrated project development and management skills/experience with the ability to manage administrative time effectively while balancing multiple tasks and maintaining meticulous attention to detail.
  • Demonstrated understanding of confidentiality and discretion.

  • Demonstrated ability to work independently as well as collaboratively in a dynamic team environment.

  • Demonstrated problem-solving skills and ability to identify and resolve problems in a timely manner; ability to develop alternative solutions; uses reason even when dealing with emotional topics.

  • Demonstrated critical and creative thinking skills; gathering and analyzing information skillfully to ensure continuous quality improvement.

  • Demonstrated ability to identify and implement changes to processes/delivery modes of services that increase efficiency.

  • Demonstrated ability to work with student information systems. And high level of Microsoft Office and other software skills

  • Ability to learn easily and disseminate detailed information.

  • Ability to maintain a sense of perspective and positive attitude in interactions with students, faculty, and staff; flexibility in times of transition.

  • Ability to work nights and/or weekends, as needed.

  • Ability to travel to other Temple University campuses and off-site locations, as needed.
