Librarian / library media specialist
The Hillside School, a K–8 independent school specializing in educating students with language-based learning differences, is seeking a warm, student-centered Part-Time Librarian / Library Media Specialist . The ideal candidate blends a love of children’s literature with expertise in information/media literacy and accessibility. This role supports our mission by building a joyous reading culture, curating an inclusive, dyslexia-friendly collection, and collaborating with teachers to strengthen literacy across the curriculum.
Responsibilities:
Library Program & Instruction
- Teach engaging K–8 library and media-literacy lessons (book selection, research skills, digital citizenship, and safe/ethical technology use).
- Promote reading stamina, choice, and joy through book talks, displays, author spotlights, and reading challenges.
Collection Development & Management
- Curate, catalog, and maintain a diverse, high-interest collection (print and digital), including decodable texts and dyslexia-friendly formats.
- Implement age-appropriate genrefication/weeding practices and manage circulation, inventory, and vendor orders.
Accessibility & Learning Differences
- Integrate multisensory strategies and accessibility tools (e.g., text-to-speech, audiobooks) to support varied reading profiles.
- Collaborate with ELA and support teams to align titles and resources with structured literacy goals and student interests.
Collaboration & Community
- Partner with teachers to resource units and projects; offer research toolkits and pathfinders.
- Coordinate library volunteers and special events (e.g., author visits, family literacy nights, book fairs).
- Maintain a welcoming, organized, sensory-aware library environment that fosters independence and self-advocacy.
- Support in classrooms and with essential school duties as needed.
Requirements:
- High school diploma required; postsecondary coursework or certification in Library/Information Science, Education, or a related field preferred.
- Candidates with prior school library, classroom, or educational support experience are strongly encouraged to apply.
- Experience supporting students with language-based learning differences (e.g., dyslexia) or a strong willingness to learn.
- Familiarity with structured literacy principles and evidence-based reading supports.
- Knowledge of children’s/YA literature, inclusive collection practices, and basic cataloging/circulation systems.
- Excellent communication, collaboration, and organization skills; comfortable assisting students in selecting books and using library resources.
