Senior Electrical Designer - Switchgear / Power Distribution

Location: Western Suburbs of Philadelphia, PA
Job Type: Full-Time
Travel: Up to 15%

A leading manufacturer of mission-critical electrical power equipment is seeking a Senior Electrical Designer to join its engineering team. This is a hands-on role responsible for the design and development of low- and medium-voltage power distribution equipment used in data centers, industrial facilities, utilities, and other critical infrastructure applications.

The ideal candidate will have extensive experience designing switchgear, power distribution equipment, and industrial control systems while serving as a technical resource for engineering and manufacturing teams. This position offers the opportunity to lead projects from concept through production while mentoring junior designers and collaborating with cross-functional teams.

Responsibilities

  • Design low- and medium-voltage switchgear, power distribution equipment, and electrical control systems.
  • Create electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, panel layouts, one-line diagrams, and interconnection drawings using AutoCAD Electrical.
  • Develop Bills of Materials (BOMs), wire lists, terminal schedules, and engineering documentation.
  • Lead electrical design activities from concept through manufacturing release.
  • Review and approve engineering drawings and documentation for accuracy and compliance.
  • Support custom-engineered products by developing electrical designs that meet customer specifications.
  • Collaborate with mechanical engineering, manufacturing, project management, and production teams to ensure efficient product execution.
  • Provide technical support during manufacturing, testing, and equipment startup.
  • Troubleshoot design issues and implement engineering improvements.
  • Maintain engineering standards, drawing libraries, and component databases.
  • Mentor junior designers and provide technical guidance on design best practices.
  • Participate in design reviews and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Support customer technical discussions and engineering change requests as required.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Electrical Engineering Technology, or a related technical discipline.
  • 7+ years of electrical design experience in industrial power systems or electrical equipment manufacturing.
  • Strong experience designing medium-voltage (MV) and low-voltage (LV) switchgear .
  • Experience with power distribution equipment, motor control centers (MCCs), substations, and industrial electrical systems.
  • Advanced proficiency with AutoCAD Electrical.
  • Ability to interpret customer specifications and develop complete electrical designs.
  • Thorough understanding of electrical schematics, one-line diagrams, control wiring, and panel layouts.
  • Strong knowledge of electrical components including:
    • Circuit breakers
    • Protective relays
    • Transformers
    • CTs and PTs
    • Metering
    • PLCs and control systems
  • Experience supporting manufacturing and production environments.
  • Excellent troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience with:

  • Medium-Voltage (MV) Metal-Clad Switchgear
  • Low-Voltage (LV) Switchgear
  • Metal-Enclosed Switchgear
  • Motor Control Centers (MCCs)
  • Arc-resistant switchgear
  • Power distribution equipment
  • Utility and critical power systems
  • Protective relay integration
  • PLC-based control systems
  • Generator paralleling switchgear

Knowledge of:

  • UL 891
  • UL 1558
  • IEEE C37 Standards
  • NEC
  • NEMA Standards

Experience with equipment from manufacturers such as Schneider Electric, Eaton, Siemens, ABB, Powell, or similar is highly desirable.

  • Lead electrical design projects from concept through manufacturing.
  • Serve as the technical expert for electrical design within the engineering department.
  • Improve existing product designs and develop new electrical solutions.
  • Work closely with manufacturing to resolve production issues.
  • Mentor junior engineers and designers.
  • Help establish engineering standards and best practices.
  • Support customer-specific engineered solutions for mission-critical power applications.
